Show The Colon (:) The colon is used to seperate parts of sentences less closely connected than those seperated by the semicolon. Rules.-When subdivisions are seperated by the semicolon. Ex.- The article contained two chief thoughts; The first that the argument was not sound: the second that it was convincing. Additional clauses as, Ex. Apply youself diligently to study: it is the only sure way to success. When a quotation is introduced, but not as the object of a verb. Ex. His works were these: If I am guilty punish me. Formal introduction as this, these, as follows etc when they introduce something. Ex. the sentence is this: I will succeed, etc. In a title page, when an explanatory expression is put in apposition without the use of a conjunction as Philadelphia & Roberts and Co. |
