A veteran backfield, with lettermen counted on for the brunt of the offensive, but some new men showing well. That is a thumbnail summary of the 1949 Mesa College Football Team—the fourth which Jay (Cotton) Tolman, the old Utah Aggie backfield great, has coached at Mesa. The squad is shaping around 14 returning lettermen. Tolman and his assistant, Lloyd Jones, have brought the team along thus far with the idea of taking the first hard games on the Maverick schedule in stride. Meeting Carbon College, Weber College, Southern Idaho State Teachers, and Carbon again in that order in the first four tilts is, as Tolman says, “Taking on a lot of stuff.” The tilt, against Weber, Tolman looks upon as the real test of his young team. The Mavericks who lost to Weber both in 1947 and 1948 were hopeful of getting the forthcoming battle into the right side of the ledger. _ “We certainly want to tame Weber this year if we can, but we have to take the game pretty: much in stride and if we make a good fight of it, Pll be well satisfied. We have a lot of respect for Weber College teams and it is always a pleasure to play them and a real thrill if we can win,” Tolman said. Delta, Lake City, Delta, Hayden, Denver, Colo. Utah Colo.
