Show 78 79 20. General Farm Management. The organization and management of the farm; the type of farm; causes for variation in returns per farm. Three quarter hours. Winter. Vocational Agriculture This program is designed to meet the needs of the young farmer who is attempting to establish himself in the business of farming, and to aid the farmer in acquiring additional skills and understanding which will help him to make satisfactory progress in farming. It is also designed to assist the individual young farmer to recognize his own problems. During the Spring, Summer, and Fall, instruction is carried out on the individual young farmer's farm, thus coordinating the practical farm work with the laboratory and class room studies. The fruit industry; location of fruit plantings; varieties; propagation; rootstocks, pruning and soil management will be discussed. Three quarter hours. Spring. Monk 52. Vegetable Crops. The culture of vegetable crops grown for both market and home. Three quarter hours. Spring. (May not be given.) Monk 54. Plant Propagation. A program designed to help the home owner or farmer in propagating flowers, trees or shrubs to be used around the home, on farm or in the garden. Two to four quarter hours. Autumn, Winter. Monk 55. Floriculture. A course designed to aid those interested in culture, arrangement and marketing of flowers. Two quarter hours. Summer. Staff 57. Insect Control. A program to aid farmers and home owners in the control of insect pests of the home, garden, farm, or livestock. Three quarter hours. Summer. Staff 58. Weed Control. A program planned to aid the farmers or home owner in the control of weeds on the farm or in the garden. The use and methods of application of new weedicides will be discussed. Three quarter hours. Spring, Summer. Staff 59. Tree Care. General maintenance, pruning, fertilizing, irrigation. Lecture, field trips. Three quarter hours. Autumn, Spring. Staff 61. Farm and Garden Soils. A course designed to aid the gardener and farmer in choosing and managing soils. Three quarter hours. Winter. Monk 64. Practical Irrigation. A program planned to aid the farmer, gardener and horticulturist with irrigation problems. Methods of water application for orchards, gardens and farms will be discussed. Three quarter hours. Autumn, Spring. Monk 65. Drainage Problems. Improvement of poorly drained soils by proper planned drains and soil treatments. Three quarter hours. Summer. Monk 67. Soil Management and Fertilizer Use. A program designed to aid the farmer in using fertilizers on the farm. Types of fertilizers to be purchased and methods of fertilizer application will be emphasized. Three quarter hours. Autumn, Winter. Monk 68. Pasture Management. Selection of land and determining mixture best adapted to the various types of soil and moisture conditions; methods of establishing pasture, rotating with other crops, methods of grazing, fencing, fertilizing and other management problems.
