Lambert The Department of Geography and Geology provides an opportunity for the student to acquire an appreciation of the natural environment through a firsthand study of local and distant areas by the use of slides, lectures, laboratory studies and field trips. A second major purpose of the department is to make the students conscious of world problems, such as conservation, the reciprocal relationship of man and his environment, and fundamental training needed by those desiring to make a vocation of geology and geography, and to aid in their placement according to their talents. Majors in Geology and Geography should consult the curricula in these fields listed under engineering. COURSES OF INSTRUCTION Geography 1. Environmental Geography. Where man lives, the relation and motion of the earth and the effects of these and the other factors such as climate, soil, land features, vegetation, and animals on his activities. A study of the many diverse features of Utah with emphasis on physiography, scenic features and natural resources; exploration and early history; plants, animals, and population trends and changes. A survey of the environment and of man and his activities on the continent of North America. Five quarter hours. (May not be given 1951-52). Buss 11. Our National Parks and Monuments. Brief survey of the geographic and geologic features that make the National Parks and Monuments outstanding. One four-day field trip required for which a special fee is to be paid. Three quarter hours. Spring. Buss Geology 1. General Geology. The earth, its rocks and minerals, its surface and subterranean features, their origin and their causes as revealed in land features. The history of the earth, from its theoretical origin to the present as interpreted from the rocks and their fossil contents. North America, particularly Utah and the adjacent areas, is emphasized. Two required field trips provide a valuable supplement to class discussion. Prerequisites: Geology 1 or Geology 11. Five quarter hours. Winter, Spring. Buss 5. Rocks and Minerals. Sight recognition of the important rock- forming and other minerals through class discussion and laboratory work, and the indentification of the common rocks of the earth's crust by mineral content, association and occurrence. A course designed to acquaint the student with the physical and other properties of the minerals and rocks which are used as gems in jewelry or decorative pieces, or are important in the rocks of the earth. Fundamentals of crystallog- graphy, and the identification, and sight recognition of the more important rock minerals by physical, chemical and blowpipe tests.
