Show MARRIOTT-SLATERVILLE CITY HISTORY JULY 2000 July was a hot, windy, dry month not soon to be forgotten. Mild concern has emerged in the surrounding area about water consumption, but it is too soon to call this summer a drought season. However, temperatures soared above 100 many days this month which created a yearning for the cooler days of Fall ahead. The City's first July 4th Celebration was held at the Marriott Park, beginning with a parade starting at 700 South near I-15 and going to the Marriott Park. The parade was outstanding, with many commenting that it was the largest and best parade ever put on in the community. I, personally, was surprised at the number of people who came to view the event, totaling far more than I had expected. Earlier that morning, the two wards, Marriott and Slaterville, held a breakfast at their respective parks. Following the parade, games and lunch were hosted at the Marriott Park. Shauna Meyerhoffer, Community Activities, planned the outstanding event, with assistance from many others in the community. Special thanks are due to Pam Slater for her coordination of the parade, Darren DeVries for his involvement with the activities at the park, the City Council who cooked lunch, and the Youth Council for their help with the games. Barbara Brown, Dennis Ilium, and Scott Van Leeuwen helped tremendously with clean-up. There were many other volunteers who worked hard to make the day a success. On a personal note, my request to finish my last year of law school at the University of Utah was approved so I will not have to commute from Laramie, Wyoming, several times a month, allowing me to work more at the city offices. The Mayor and Council were appreciative of my improved situation. |
