Show The Pioneer Post _ Marriott-Slaterville City Newsletter Volume II Issue 7 July 2000 COUNCIL REPORT: THE LEGACY HIGHWAY by Orvil Holley, Council President If you have been wondering where the so called Legacy Highway would be built in Weber County, hold on to your hat. It is planned right through Marriott-Slaterville. Planners for the new highway have said the most preferred route is beneath the large power lines in our City at about 3100 West. This proposed route goes through some of the most pristine area in all Weber County. Your city elected and appointed officials have determined to oppose the Legacy Highway through our City. We have attended meetings, met with citizen groups, and received and given our input on this subject. In a letter addressed to Mike Hegarty of Baker Engineering and George Ramjoue of the Wasatch Front Regional Council. In the letter the Mayor and Council expressed opposition to the route through our city based upon the following reasons: 1. Proximity. It is too close to existing I-15 and 1900/2000 West which defeats the real purpose for the new highway. Safety. It is not a safe procedure to build freeways so close to each other. 3. Fanning. Some of our best farms farmland is in this very location. 4. Habitat. This area includes the most pristine and beautiful area in the lower valley of Weber County. This area has lush wetlands, wildlife, natural trails, and open space. 5. Public Responsibility. The people of Marriott-Slaterville have already assumed more than their fair share of past public projects. The DDO took 1,000 acres of farms and 43 families from our community. I-15 split the community, the Willard Canal split it again, and Central Weber Sewer was also placed within our community. Copies of the letter were also sent to Gov. Leavitt, Speaker Stephens, and Senator Hull. A copy of this letter is on file at the city office. Since this letter was sent, a meeting was held in West Weber. Most of the cities and townships in western Weber County were in attendance. Also present were our state representatives, Marty Stephens, Joe Hull and candidate Scott Jenkins. At that meeting it was agreed by all parties that there is no need for Legacy Highway in Weber County. We also refer you to the article in the Standard-Examiner on July 13, 2000, titled "No need for Legacy Route in Weber, lawmakers say" We do not intend to let this project through our city. It would be well for us to be 100% united on this issue. If you have suggestions or ideas to better our community let us know. Complete the registration form and return it to the city office or call the city office to register before July 31st. Then be at Slaterville Park at 7:00 PM on August 3rd and 4th ready to play. NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARINGS Notice is hereby given that on Wednesday, July 26, 2000 at 7:00 p.m., and again on Tuesday, August 1, 2000 at 7:00 p.m. (if necessary), the Marriott-Slaterville City (MSC) Planning Commission will hold a public hearing to receive comments from the public regarding recommended amendments to several chapters in Title 12, 13 and 14, particularly chapters regarding Aguiculture Protection Areas, Planned Residential Unit Development (P.R.U.D.), Small Public Land Use Subdivisions, Administration, Home Occupations, Design Review, Standards for Single Family Dwellings, Board of Adjustment, and Land Use Permit/Building Permit/Certificate of Occupancy, and possibly regarding other related chapters (Ordinance 2000-13 and 2000-19). The Planning Commission will, during the same meeting(s), hold its annual public hearing to receive comments from the public regarding recommendations to the General Plan, including but not limited to General Plan Petition #00-01, for property owned by Frank Blair at various locations on or near 400 North and Mulligan's Golf Course, 1200 West, and the Willard Canal. The MSC Council will hold a public hearing regarding the Planning Commission's recommendations concerning these same issues, which recommendations may be approved in final form by the City Council, with or without amendment, on |
