Conferences Elaine Sandoval 801-626-7157 The continuing education staff plans and facilitates conferences for professional, business, government, public school, higher education, and community organizations. Participants from every state and from many countries have given high evaluations after attending such conferences as Families Alive, Western Conference of the Association for Asian Studies, the annual Office Technologies Symposium, the Quality Conference, the Storytelling Festival, Senior Discovery, Success for All Students: Addressing a Community of Diverse Learners, the National Undergraduate Literature Conference, and many others. High School to College Programs CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT PROGRAM Dianne Siegfreid 801-626-7297 Concurrent enrollment is a college class usually taught at the high school by an approved high school teacher. Concurrent enrollment classes are also available at local Applied Technology Centers (ATCs) and the Job Corps. These classes can earn you both high school graduation and college credit when successfully completed. Weber State University works closely with educational partners at the high schools, ATCs and Job Corps to assure that concurrent enrollment class content, student performance and faculty qualifications match or exceed those found on the college campus. EARLY COLLEGE PROGRAM 801-626-7362 Early College is an innovative, educational opportunity. When students enroll in Early College, they become university students while they are still in high school. The program lets students enter college early, replacing or adding to their high school studies with university courses. The credits earned are transferable to other colleges and universities across the country. International Programs Elaine Sandoval 801-626-7157 TRAVEL STUDY/STUDY ABROAD WSU 's international travel programs educate students to become well-informed citizens with an understanding of the world around them. Local students who have experienced living and learning on the social and educational terms of another culture will be broadened in ways impossible to achieve on an American campus. International travel experiences improve returned-student classroom performance, help students mature in positive ways, and help students become contributing and empathetic citizens of the world. The international travel programs continuing education facilitates also provide knowledge and experience to WSU faculty. NON-CREDIT ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) Continuing education facilitates Peak Experience, a non-credit English as a Second Language (ESL) program for international students who are not primarily seeking degrees. Students converse in English, make new friends on campus and in the community, and enjoy outings to cultural and scenic attractions. CONTRACT EDUCATION FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Continuing education presents a variety of academic, cultural, and United States travel experiences for international students through contracts with corporations and educational institutions in other countries. Off-Campus, Evening & Weekend Classes Brian Stecklein andLonnie Campbell 801-626-7241 After 4:30 p.m. and on weekends, on campus and at a dozen convenient northern Utah locations, Weber State University students can pursue bachelor's and associate of science degrees through evening and off-campus credit programs facilitated by continuing education. Off-campus sites have included Utah Valley State College, Salt Lake Community College, Thiokol Corp., Clearfield High School, Davis High School, Ogden/Weber Applied Technology Center, Davis Applied Technology Center, Clearfield Job Corps, Ogden Defense Depot, WSU Davis in Layton, and the Internal Revenue Service. Professional Development Stu Boyd 801-626-7474 Pamela Rogers 801-626-7948 CONTRACT TRAINING PROGRAMS The continuing education professional development team provides analysis, design, delivery and administration of training services in direct response to special training needs at businesses and agencies. Locations, times, and training content are based on the customers' needs. Contract training ensures a substantial cost savings per employee, saves valuable traveling time and expense, encourages a cooperative problem-solving effort, and brings together employees of similar backgrounds, needs and interests. Program areas include management/organizational training, quality management, customer service, and managing for diversity. CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS Kristie Nielsen 801-626-6774 The professional development certification program partners with professional associations to deliver certification exam preparation courses. Courses are designed for individuals with knowledge and experience in related fields who wish to receive professional recognition or expand their skills. Partners include APICS (the Educational Society for Resource Management), ASQ (American Society for Quality) and N2APM (National Association of Purchasing Management). Computer certification courses are also available. UTAH LAW ENFORCEMENT ACADEMY KentPaskins 801-626-7949 WSU Continuing Education is a sanctioned provider of the Utah Law Enforcement Academy, the basic training program for certification of law enforcement officers. The academy is divided into two modules. The first, or core, provides training required for certification of reserve officers, corrections, or special function officers. The second module continues with training for certification of an officer with full police powers (police, deputy sheriff, Utah Highway Patrol). Distance Learning Program Support WSU ONLINE Tamara AM 801-626-6091 WSU Online, Weber State University's Internet campus, is managed for the university by continuing education's distance learning and by WSU communications arts and technologies (CATS). Through WSU Online, students can be admitted, enroll, take courses, buy books, use the library and other campus services, and participate in extracurricular activities on computers at home, work or school. WSU Online opened in the fall of 1997 with 20 courses, expanded to 80 in 1998, and adds and new courses and activities each academic term. In 1998, WSU Online received the UCEA/ Peterson's award for innovative distance education. INDEPENDENT STUDY COURSES Chris Jorgensen 801-626-7389 Continuing education offers courses from a wide range of academic disciplines for students who cannot attend regularly- scheduled classes. This allows students to complete coursework at home (or anywhere) at their own convenience. Over 2,000 students enroll in this self-paced individualized mode of study each year, choosing from over 70 courses in more than two dozen disciplines. CERTIFICATE AND DEGREE PROGRAMS Susan Shaner 801-626-7078 Distance learning staff work with instructors and administrators of several academic program areas to develop and deliver unique programs that combine self-directed courses with intensive workshop sessions. In addition to board registry preparation courses in respiratory therapy and the radiologic sciences, distance learning programs are available at the associate level in two areas of respiratory therapy and at the baccalaureate level in advanced respiratory therapy, clinical laboratory science, health information management, health promotion, health services administration, and in four areas within the radiologic sciences. DISTANCE LEARNING SUPPORT Distance learning staff help faculty develop printed course materials, assist them with on-line course delivery, and are available to consult on course-development issues for any form of electronic delivery. They use this marketing information to create marketing and promotional materials to inform the public about university offerings. The Mission of Continuing Education Continuing education serves the mission of Weber State University through learning partnerships with the institution's non- traditional constituencies. The continuing education network of collaborative working relationships reaches pre-college students; working, re-entry and older adult learners; business and industry; governmental agencies; non-profit groups; public education organizations, and professional associations. Continuing education primarily addresses regional needs, but also expands Weber State University's influence by matching university and community resources with the needs of national and global partners. Continuing education develops quality learning experiences in a deliberately inclusive environment to help every participant achieve full potential. These learning experiences range from academic degree programs and courses delivered in cooperation with the university's academic departments to customized noncredit courses that draw on community resources.
