Show ■ Automotive Engineering Tech Mechanical Engineering Tech General Information TRANSFER STUDENTS FROM AN AUTO SERVICE PROGRAM Students who have completed a program in Auto Service or have other significant automotive background and who enroll at Weber State in Automotive Engineering Technology are given the following guidelines regarding satisfying the required AET courses. 1. Automotive engineering technology courses address the function of automotive systems and the many requirements for successful design. These include broad considerations of manufacturability, serviceability and performance rather than skills of diagnosis and repair. While a background in Auto Service will be a definite asset to an AET student, the courses completed in such a program, even if course titles are the same, should not be expected to satisfy requirements in the AET program. 2. There are three options for satisfying the required AET courses: a. Take the AET courses at WSU for credit. b. Pass an official challenge exam (scheduled through the Graduation Office) for each AET course. This exam will be similar to the final exam taken by students enrolled in the course. Successfully passing the challenge exam results in credit being recorded on the student's transcript. c. Take AET 320 for credit as a first course at WSU. Success in this course will require a strong and up-to-date background in automotive electronics and fuel systems. Credit earned at WSU in AET 320 with the grade of C or better will be treated as a successful challenge of AET 110, 200 and 210, but it is the responsiblity of the student to initiate the application for credit at the Graduation Office and pay any fees for having the credit for these three courses recorded on the transcript. Students are notified that most AET courses are offered only once every two years and that a plan for satisfying AET courses should be made with a program advisor and incorporate in the student's schedule at the beginning of the student's first quarter at WSU. AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY COURSES - AET m 110. Driving Mechanisms (5) A '92-93 Theory, maintenance, principles of operation of clutches, transmissions, drive lines. Three lectures and two 3-hour labs a week. 189. Cooperative Work Experience (1-4) Open to all first year declared majors in Automotive Engineering Technology. Provides academic credit for on-the-job experience. Grade and amount of credit will be determined by the department. Prerequisite: DG 120/120L and Math 106. 200. Electrical Systems (5) A '91-92 Fundamentals of electricity. Theory, operation, testing, diagnosing, maintenance procedures. Three lectures and two 3-hour labs a week. Prerequisite or corequisite: Phsx 262 and 265. 210. Fuel Systems (5) W '91-92 Theory, operation, application and maintenance of carburetion and fuel injection systems on gas and diesel I.C. engines. Three lectures and two 3-hour labs a week. Prerequisite: AET 200. 289. Cooperative Work Experience (1-4) Open to second year Automotive Engineering technology students. A continuation of AET 189. Prerequisite: AET 210. 292. Short courses, Workshops, Institutes, and Special Programs (1-6) Consult the quarterly class schedule for the current offering under this number. Fuel and Lubricants (3) A '92-93 Characteristics, families, test, additives and performance related to I.C. engines. Prerequisites: Chem NS111 and AET 210. 320. Engine Diagnosis and Testing (5) S '91-92 Diagnosis and testing of ignition, fuel systems and computer controls in current automotive technology to meet performance and federally regulated emission standards. Three lectures and two 3-hour labs per week. Prerequisite: AET 200 and 210. 389. Cooperative Work Experience (1-4) Open to third year Automotive Engineering Technology students. A continuation of AET 289. Prerequisite: MET 331 and AET 320. 400. Automotive Structures, Steering, Suspension and Brakes (4) A '91-92 Performance characteristics and design parameters in current automotive technology. Three lectures and three hours of laboratory per week. Prerequisite: Credit or concurrent enrollment in MET 331. 410. Testing and Analysis of Power Units (3) S '92-93 Testing on engine dynamometer, chassis dynamometer and other equipment. Graphs prepared and analyzed. One lecture and two 2- hour lecture-lab combinations. Prerequisite: credit or concurrent enrollment in AET 320. 420. Internal Combustion Engines (4) W '92-93 Performance characteristics and design parameters in current automotive technology of I.C. engines. Three lectures and three hours of laboratory per week. Prerequisite: AET 320. 461, 462, 463. Senior Projects (6) A, W, S An engineering design problem will be selected for team solution. Problems will require analysis, evaluation, design, planning, development, production and testing. Prerequisite: MET 338. Courses must be taken in the order listed. 483. Directed Readings (1-4) Arranged. Prerequisite: consent of instructor. 489. Cooperative Work Experience (1-4) Open to fourth year Automotive Engineering Technology students. A continuation of AET 389. Prerequisite: MET 338. 492. The specific title with the credit authorized for the particular offering will appear on the student transcript. MECHANICAL ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY Advisers: Robert Parker, Carl Wood, David A. Erb Description Engineering Technology is that part of the technological field which requires the application of scientific and engineering knowledge and methods combined with technical skills in support of engineering activities; it lies in the occupational spectrum between the craftsman and the engineer at the end of the spectrum closest to the engineer. The curriculum includes "hands-on" experience in shops and laboratories as well as in-depth problem solving courses based on mathematics and the engineering sciences. Successful students in this program reach levels of proficiency in making laboratory measurements, in calculating and in writing reports.
