PROGRAM: BUSINESS EDUCATION TEACHING MINOR The Business Education Teaching Minor must be cleared with the BEAS department by the beginning of a student's junior year. • The Business Education Teaching Minor must be cleared with the department by the beginning of a student's junior year. • Twenty-seven credit hours are required. • Required courses (23 credit hours): Beas 200 (2), 207 (1), 250 (4), 301 (3), 302 (4), 360 (2)*, 361 (3)*, 363 (3)*, 289 or 489 (2). • Select one area of emphasis: Administrative Systems Emphasis: • Beas 362 (2)* • Two credit hours from the following: Beas 120 (3), 123 (4), 201 (4), 202 (3), 208 (1), 308 (1), 310 (3), 325 (4), 353 (3), 355 (4), 356 (3). PROGRAM: OFFICE SYSTEMS SUPPORT ASSOCIATE OF APPLIED SCIENCE DEGREE General Requirements: • At lease 20 hours from the general education courses listed in the catalog including at least one course in each of the four areas of Humanities (HU), Natural Sciences (NS), Social Sciences (SS), and Personal Development (PD). • English 111, and one other course in written or oral communication in consultation with adviser. • 93 total hours are required. • This degree does require math competency (see index). BUSINESS EDUCATION/ ADMINISTRATIVE SYSTEMS COURSES - BEAS 101. Elementary PC Keyboarding and Applications (3) An automated approach to learning the keyboard and the keyboarding of letters, reports, and tables using microprocessors. 104. Speedbuilding Keyboarding (2) Keyboard review. Skill, speed, and production development using microprocessors. Prerequisite: knowledge of the keyboard. 120. Computer Shorthand (3) Introduction to computer shorthand theory. Application of computer shorthand in word processing applications. No prior shorthand knowledge necessary. 121. Elementary Shorthand (4) Introduction to shorthand theory with emphasis upon reading and writing fluency. Prerequisite: keyboarding 40 wpm. 122. Intermediate Shorthand (4) Any shorthand system. Shorthand theory in practice dictation. Shorthand 50 wpm recommended. 123. Advanced Shorthand (4) Any shorthand system. Stenographic abbreviations, phrases, and transcription. Shorthand 70 wpm recommended. 150. Business Mathematics by Calculating Machines (4) Problems in percentage, discount, simple and compound interest, merchandising, taxes, etc., solved by calculators. 151. Calculating Machines (2) For students in majors other than Administrative Systems, Business Education or Secretarial Science. Using electronic 10-key calculators to solve personal business problems. Credit toward graduation requirements not granted for both Beas 150 and 151. 200. Introductory Word Processing (2) Operation of microprocessors for WordPerfect software. Involves creating, storing, retrieving, and editing documents; merge; math; macros; sort. Keyboarding 40 wpm recommended. 201. Business English/Machine Transcription (4) English essentials, letter writing, proofreading, and transcribing machines. Prerequisites: Beas 200. 202. Records Management (3) The management, planning, and controlling of records including retrieval, equipment, supplies, microforms, vital records, word processing, and data automation techniques. 207. Introduction to Spreadsheets (1) Developing skills on a microprocessor using spreadsheets. 208. Introduction to Database (1) Developing skills on a microprocessor using database software. 250. Introduction to Telecommunications (4) Fundamental concepts of telecommunications. State of the art technologies and applications. 289. Cooperative Work Experience (1-9) Open to all students in the Business Education/Administrative Systems Department who meet the minimum Cooperative Work Experience requirements of the department. Provides academic credit for on-the-job experience. Grade and amount of credit will be determined by the department. 292. Short Courses, Workshops, Institutes, and Special Programs (1-6) Consult the quarterly class schedule for the current offering under this number. The specific title and credit authorized will appear on the student transcript. 300. Intermediate Word Processing (1) Developing indepth skill in WordPerfect software using microprocessors for office information applications including newspaper and parallel columns, references, and graphics. 301. Advanced Word Processing Applications (3) Tables, letters, reports, graphics, and other office applications using WordPerfect software. Prerequisites: BEAS 200, 300. 302. Word Processing Systems (4) The effect of modern technology upon people, procedures, and equipment. Merging of information systems with origination, production, reproduction, distribution, and storage. 307. Spreadsheet Applications (1) Enhancing skills on a microprocessor using spreadsheet software. Prerequisite: Beas 207. 308. Database Applications (1) Enhancing skills on a microprocessor using database software. Prerequisite: Beas 208. 309. Graphics (2) Developing skills using graphic software for office applications to include charts, diagrams, certificates, print fonts and sizes, and importing data from other softwares. The software used for this course is Harvard Graphics. Prerequisites: Beas 200, 207. 310. Introductory Desktop Publishing (3) Operation of latest methods in desktop publishing software including creating, storing, retrieving, and editing of brochures, flyers, and other publications. Word processing background recommended. 311. Intermediate Desktop Publishing (3) Integration of a series of documents in a variety of software packages and scanned art fdes into large volume publications using windows and a variety of graphics. Advanced Desktop Publishing (3) Applications of a variety of software packages, scanned files, and generated files for the production of large volumes including professional reports, manuals, forms, and illustrated documents. Education Prerequisite: Beas 311. 325. Business Communications (4) Review and application of oral and written communications, including report writing. Prerequisite: English 111. Health Professions 350. Transport Media (3) Transport media, requirements, and considerations. Definitions, design parameters, technical standards, operations, and maintenance requirements utilized in baseband and broadband communication. Beas 250 or equivalent recommended. 352. Telephone Switching Systems (3) Components and management of PBX, key, and other telephone systems. Software operating switching systems. Requirements and the laws affecting Shared Tenant Services. Beas 250 or equivalent recommended. 353. Modern Office Procedures (3) _ . . „ Social & Provides knowledge and skills for modem office procedures with Behavioral microprocessor applications.
