Show Theatre Arts Theatre Arts General nformation PROGRAM: COMPOSITE MUSIC THEA TRE EMPHASIS BACHELOR DEGREE General Requirements: • WSU Core Requirements (see index). • General Education Requirements (see index). • No minor is required. • All major courses must be a C (2.00) or better. • Must achieve an overall GPA of C (2.00) or better. • 183 total credit hours are required. Sixty of the total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). Specific Requirements: 96 credit hours Pre-major Core for Musical Theatre Emphasis • Dance-169(3). • Music -HU 104 (3), 109 (3) (if needed for admission to 110). • Theatre Arts - 105 (3), 110 (3). A minor is required. Theatre Arts majors must have a C or better in major courses. An overall GPA of 2.00 or C is required. 183 total hours are required for this degree. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). Specific Requirements: • Theatre Arts courses required from the following (60 credit hours): Foundation Block: Theatr 105 (3), 110 (3), 120 (3), 130 (3). Development Block: Theatr 212 (3), 240 (3), 330 (4), 331 (4), 332 (4), 410 (3), and one of the following: (Theatr 320 (3), 321 (3), 322 (3) or 323 (3) plus nine elective credits from the following tracks: Design/Tech (min 3 hours): Theatr 220 (3), 221 (3), 320 (3), 321 (3), 322 (3), 323 (3), 324 (3), and 325 (3). Acting/Directing (min 3 hours): Theatr 210 (3), 211 (3), 305 (3), 306 (3), 310 (3), 312 (3). History: Theatr 333 (3), 334 (3), Management: Theatr 340 (3), Commun 305 (3); Mgmt 300 (3). A Pinnacle Block: Theatr 499 (3), and 480 (3), plus 3 elective credit hours from the following: Theatr 411 (3), or 489 (3). Integrated Studies Rationale: A written rationale explaining connections between 9 credit hours of courses taken for "general requirements" and the major's chosen area of emphasis. It will be submitted to the Theatre Arts area coordinator as a requirement of TA 499 (Senior Seminar). Production Supplement: 2 credit hours of Theatr 215/ 415 (1), 2 credit hours of Theatr 225/425 (1), and 2 credit hours of Theatr 245/445(1). PROGRAM: THEATRE ARTS MINOR General Requirements: • A grade of C or better in minor courses. Specific Requirements: • Theater Arts courses required (28 credit hours): Foundation Block: Theatr 105 (3), 110 (3), 120(3), 130(3). Development Block: Theatr 212 (3), 240 (3), 410 (3), and one course from each of the following two categories: • Design: Theatr 320 (3), 321 (3), 322 (3), or 323 (3). • History: Theatr 330 (4), 331 (4), 332 (4), 333 (3), 334 (3). Pinnacle, Interdisciplinary and Production Supplement Blocks are not Required for the Minor. PROGRAM: THEATRE ARTS TEACHING MAJOR BACHELOR DEGREE General Requirements: • WSU Core Requirements (see index). • General Education Requirements (see index). • Psych SS101 (5) in the Social Science area is recommended for Theatre Arts Teaching majors. • Theatre Arts Teaching majors must have a C or better in major courses. • Theatre Arts Teaching majors must achieve an overall 2.50 GPA. • 183 total hours are required for this degree. • Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). • Students obtaining a Theatre Arts Teaching major must satisfy the College of Education Certification Program (see Teacher Education Program). Specific Requirements: • Because of the extensive practical knowledge necessary for a secondary teaching career, the following courses are required for the teaching major (72 credit hours): Theatr 105 (3), 110 (3), 120 (3), 130 (3), 210 (3), 211 (4), 212 (3), 215 (1), 220 (3), 221 (3), 225 (1), 240 (3), 245 (1), 275 (2), 323 (3), 330 (4), 331 (4), 332 (4), 340 (3), 410 (3), 411 (3), 415 (1), 425 (1), 445 (1), 471 (3), 480 (3), 499 (3). • Support course required: Commun HU102 (3). PROGRAM: THEATRE ARTS TEACHING MINOR General Requirements: • A grade of C or better in minor courses. Specific Requirements: • Because of the extensive practical knowledge necessary for a secondary teaching career, the following courses are required for the teaching major (29 credit hours): Theatr 105 (3), 110 (3), 120 (3), 130 (3), 212 (3), 240 (3), 275 (2), 323 (3), 410 (3), 471 (3). PROG RAM: THEA TRE ARTS HONORS General Requirements: • Enroll in General Honors Program and complete at least 10 hours of General Honors courses (see the Interdisciplinary Programs section of the catalog). • Maintain an overall GPA of 3.3 • Fulfill the requirements for one of the Theatre Arts majors, or Communication and Theatre Arts Teaching major. Specific Requirements: • In fulfilling one of the Theatre Arts majors, take at least twenty hours among these requirements in courses taken for Theatre Arts Honors credit. • Complete a Theatre Arts Honors Senior Project. • A student may receive Theatre honors credit in any of the following courses: Theatr 321 (3), 322 (3), 323 (3), 324 (3), 330 (4), 331 (4), 332 (4), 340 (3), 410 (3), 412 (4), 483 (3), 499 (3). PROGRAM: THEATRE ARTS AND COMMUNICATION TEACHING COMPOSITE MAJOR WITH THEATRE EMPHASIS - (See program requirements in the Composite Teaching Majors section of the College of Education.) THEATRE ARTS COURSES-THEATR Student Services Interdisc. Programs HU101. Understanding The Theatre (3) An introduction to live theatre. The purpose of this course is to develop critical awareness by actively involving students in elements of theatre. Students attend theatre Applied productions outside of regularly scheduled class time. Science & Technology HU102. Survey of Cinema (3) Explores cinema as the major art form of contemporary American culture. Some foreign films are also used. Students are required to attend film screenings outside of the regularly scheduled class time. A lab fee is required for this class. HU104. Survey of American Musical Theatre (3) A, W, S An introduction to the American Musical Theatre. The purpose of this course is to develop critical awareness by actively involving students in the various elements of musical theatre. 105. Introduction to Theatre (3) W Introduces the student to the various aspects of the theatre: acting/directing, design/technical, dramatic literature/ history. In addition to reading selected masterworks of dramatic literature, the student will learn the vocabulary of theatre. The purpose, function and inter-relatedness of the artists within the theatre will be explored. 110. Acting: An Introduction (3) A, W, S An overview of creativity using the human body, intellect and spirit. Emphasizes the fundamentals of acting and stage comportment. NOTE: Although the course will be offered every quarter, theatre majors are strongly encouraged to enroll in the "majors section" offered Fall quarter. 120. Backstage at the Theatre (3) W Allied with Theatre Arts works in progress this course explores production efforts toward mounting Weber State productions from concept to performance. Hands on experience is emphasized in this exploration of creative development. Two arranged studio hours per week are required. 130. Script Analysis (3) W Introduces students to methods of analyzing drama for the purpose of theatre production. Scripts for plays currently in production at Weber State, and a wide variety of others, will be examined.
