70 9. Speech for Everyday Needs. Designed to assist students in the most practical aspects of speech performance. Emphasis is placed on the organization and making of short speeches of a practical nature, related as closely as possible to individual interests and needs. Vocabulary development, good pronunciation, and the overcoming of common faulty expressions are supplementary aspects of the course. Two quarter hours. Autumn. Allred 51. Remedial Speech. For students who need special help in articulation, voice, and stage presence. Students will receive appraisals at registration time or will be advised to enroll for the course by teachers of Basic Communication. Two quarter hours. Autumn, Winter, Spring. Rowley DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE ARTS Thatcher Allred, T. L. Rowley, John M. Elzey The Department of Theatre Arts encompasses, in addition to the classes and activities directly associated with theatre, those of the closely allied areas of radio, television, interpretative reading, and voice improvement. Students majoring in Theatre Arts are required to complete Theatre Arts Courses 1, 10, 15, 20, 30, 33, and 37. It is recommended also that majors in Theatre Arts complete when possible Theatre Arts 4, 11, 13, 21, 25, 31, 35, 38, and 42. The following courses may be applied to meet General Education requirements: Theatre Arts 1, and 4, and English 31, 35, and 42. It is also recommended that all students in Theatre Arts courses take advantage of the activities sponsored or supervised by the department as essential parts of its curricular offerings. These activities are open to all students who qualify to participate and who maintain required standards of scholarship. Currently the Department of Theatre Arts maintains or collaborates in the sponsorship of the following activity programs under the supervision of the Weber College Theatre: Major Productions. These plays are cast through tryouts open to students, faculty, and the community at large. Students who qualify may appear in acting roles or as assistants on the business and publicity, or technical staffs, organized to support productions. The current program in this major-series of plays calls for one production each quarter of the regular college year. Musical Productions. Through alliance with the Music Department, the Department of Theatre Arts collaborates in the production of one major musical production as well as with the musical production incident to the Christmas season. In such productions, students may qualify for acting, singing, or dancing roles, or as assistants on production staffs. 71 Acting Workshop. Each quarter, interested students try out for, and may be cast in an all-student production which is usually staged in the Arena Theatre for the general public; students awarded roles then register for Theatre Arts 13 and may receive credit varying from 1-5 quarter hours, depending upon the demands of the role and the discretion of the director. Directing Class. In addition to the regular dramatic activities of the Department of Theatre Arts, each student enrolled in Theatre Arts 15 (Elementary Directing) must cast and direct a one-act play as a part of class expectations. Selected plays from this group may be presented before church audiences, clubs, or other organizations in the community. Theatre for Children. Through the medium of Theatre for Children, Weber College offers the opportunity of a touring show each spring quarter. A play, prepared for presentation to young people, is taken throughout the elementary schools in the Ogden area and, sometimes, to surrounding communities. The show tours for approximately one month during afternoon hours and offers opportunity for extended acting and play production experience. Summer Theatre. During the Summer Season, the Department, in cooperation with the Weber County and Ogden City Recreation Departments, produces an outdoor play. Traditionally, these productions are lavish, and include music and dance with an appeal to both adult and young audience members. Tau Alpha Gamma Dramatic Fraternity. Tau Alpha Gamma, Weber College's honorary theatre arts club, is a student organization sponsored by the Department of Theatre Arts. The club objective is to provide an outlet for interested students to work in dramatic activities additional to the regular plays, under direction of club members. Under supervision of the Department of Theatre Arts, students may qualify also through various classes, or through open tryouts, to participate in the following activities: Forensic Competition. In the fields of radio-speaking, acting, and interpretative reading in tournament competition with other colleges, both in and out of the state. Poetry Reading Festival. An activity conducted each spring at Utah State University in which students may receive citation for excellence. Community Service Bureau. This includes speaking, reading, acting, and story-telling before various audiences, either on or off the campus, as part of the college's service to community groups. Traveling Assembly Programs. Assemblies are sent each spring, under college auspices, to various high schools in the City, or in adjacent areas. Qualified Theatre Arts students are eligible to assignment in these programs as actors and readers.
