Show 148 16. Philosophy of Religion. An introduction to the central problems of accidental religions. The nature and proofs for God, freedom, and immortality, and the problem of evil are among the problems considered. Five quarter hours. Spring. Olson DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY E. C. Larsen, W. C. Neville A student preparing to major in sociology or social work should complete all regular requirements for the title of Associate of Arts or Associate of Science, and in addition, should complete Sociology 1, 2, 8. It is recommended that the student take courses in other social sciences. There are no prerequisites for any course in the department. Sociology Club. Any student who has an interest in studying and developing social relationships and social welfare in the College and community is eligible for membership. Club fees are nominal. The Sociology Club sponsors field trips, a lecture series, and entertainment. COURSES OF INSTRUCTION Sociology 1. Elementary Principles of Sociology. Group life and organization, the social processes, social institutions, social disorganization, population, race, social status, social changes and social control are studied in terms of interaction and influences upon individual personality and behavior. Five quarter hours. Autumn, Winter, Spring. Neville 2. Social Psychology. The growth and development of human personality and behavior as a result of social interaction is the major thesis of this course. Personality theories are evaluated. Applications are made to the fields of education, government, business, medicine, and mental hygiene. Five quarter hours. Autumn Winter, Neville 4. Introduction of Social Problems. Crime, delinquency, poverty, unemployment, illness, accidents, the physically and mentally handicapped, race prejudice, population, immigration, and war are some of the problems studied. Field trips and surveys are taken. Five quarter hours. Spring. Neville 5. Rural Sociology. Rural institutions and the values and problems of country life. Three quarter hours. Winter. (May not be given 1958-59.) Neville 6. Urban Sociology. The rise and development of the city, problems of city life, the metropolitan community, and the interaction and interdependence of city and county. Three quarter hours. Winter. (May not be given.) Neville 149 8. Marriage and the Family. Human relations for successful marriage are stressed. Major topics studied are: historical background, marriage customs, courtship, marriage prediction tests and inter-personal relationships. Community resources such as religious, educational, health, welfare, recreational and legal institutions are studied as they contribute to successful family living and the social development of the child. Field trips are taken. Three quarter hours. Autumn, Winter, Spring. Neville 10. Introduction to Social Work. An introduction to the fields of professional social and case work. The qualifications needed for career social work as well as some basic principles and objectives of social work will be presented. Field trips to welfare institutions will be taken. Three quarter hours. Spring. Neville 12. Introduction to Industrial Sociology. Deals with the social problems of the working situation, the social organization of the plant, and the social adjustments of the worker in industry, the community, and society. Three quarter hours. Winter. Larsen 21. Social Relationships. Social relationships, acquiring of social skills, and meeting problems of courtship, marriage, work, and recreation. Three quarter hours. Spring. Larsen |
