A survey course in the literature of the drama stressing the nature and significance of dramatic literature together with a study of representative plays, old and recent, of lasting significance. English Literature. An historical and appreciative survey of English literature from 1660 to 1798. Three quarter hours. Winter. Monson 41. English Literature. An historical and appreciative survey of English literature from 1789 to 1900. Three quarter hours. Spring. Monson 42. Shakespeare. A course devoted primarily to a reading and interpretation of representative Shakespearean plays, with the aim of developing an appreciation for the art with which Shakespeare presents his characters. Five quarter hours. Autumn, Spring. Monson 44. Modern British Literature. An historical survey of British literature from 1900 to the present. Five quarter hours. Spring. Monson 45. The English Novel. An historical and appreciative study of the development of the English novel from its beginnings to the present day. Five quarter hours. Winter. Monson 47. Authors of Today. A course designed to help the student find enjoyment and profit in reading the works, both fiction and non-fiction, of contemporary writers, and to teach him to discriminate between the rewarding and the inconsequential in the "best sellers" which flood the market. Two quarter hours. Spring. P. Allred Speech It is recommended that Speech Majors complete courses numbered: 1, 3, 4, 5, 10, 13. 1. Basic Speech. An introductory course in the field of speech with emphasis on the attitudes and skills leading to a fuller functioning of the student both as an intelligent listener and as a communicator of ideas. Recommended for all students, majors as well as others. This course should precede the more specialized work in speech, called for in Speech 3 and 21. Three quarter hours. Autumn, Winter, Spring. Staff 2. Voice and Diction. Designed "to acquaint the student with the mechanics of voice production as a basis for improvement of voice articulation, enunciation, and pronunciation. Intended for majors as an introduction course, as well as for students confronted with simple, minor voice or articulatory difficulties. Three quarter hours. Autumn. Staff 3. Public Address. Designed to give more precise training and experience in the selection of subject matter, and in the delivery of speeches for specific purposes, audiences and occasions. Exprience gained in this course is intended to more fully qualify students for speeches outside the class room itselfin the college, and community, and in the forensic endeavors of the department. Three quarter hours. Autumn, Winter Spring. Staff 4. Principles of Oral Reading. Designed to cultivate discrimination in the selection of material for reading together with emphasis on procedures for gaining an understanding of both meaning and mood from what is selected. Three quarter hours. Autumn. Staff 5. Interpretative Speech. Designed to extend more fully the experience gained in Speech 10 into the areas of performance before audiences. Major emphasis is given to the techniques of expression, together with a cultivation of poise and standards of performance when reading to others. Three quarter hours. Autumn, Winter, Spring. Staff 6. Speech tor the Classroom Teacher. Designed in collaboration with the Department of Education of the college to give practical training in selected aspects of speech deemed of most immediate consequence to persons seeking to qualify as public school teachers. The individual needs of class members are given special attention. Three quarter hours. Spring. Staff 7. Speech Arts Workshop. Designed to give training with view to the immediate utilization of student abilities for public appearances, as speakers, readers, story tellers, book reviewers. Preparation for and acceptance of engagements, both on and off the campus, is contemplated. Registration subject to approval of the instructor. Two quarter hours. Autumn. Staff 8. Speech for Recreation Leaders. Designed to give practical training in aspects of speech most commonly needed by those who go into the field of recreational leadership. Emphasis is placed on the making of speeches of specialized kinds, and on skills in handling narrative materials. Two quarter hours. Spring. (May not be given). Staff |
