Show 62 2. Voice and Diction. A course devoted to a study of the speech mechanism and to its relation to effective voice; to a study of basic sounds and their relation to correct enunciation, articulation and pronunciation. The course is designed also to provide the basis for remedial efforts for students having voice handicaps, or speech disorders or defects. Recommended for students with minor oral difficulties who require speech diagnosis and advice, as well as for speech majors who need improvement in voice and diction, and foundation in the field of remedial speech. Three quarter hours. Autumn. White 3. Extempore Speaking. A course designed to give special training in speech making exclusively. It deals with the most frequently used types of speeches and places careful emphasis on choice of subjects, sound organization, effective content, and delivery. Three quarter hours. Autumn. (May not be given.) T. Allred 5. Interpretation. A course devoted to the purpose of more effective oral reading. It lays emphasis on cultivation of literary tastes, and on the acquiring of practical skills in analyzing and in the oral interpretation of selected reading matter. Recommended for the individual uses and satisfactions of the student and as a preliminary course to Acting or Radio Speech. Five quarter hours. Autumn, Spring. T. Allred 6. Speech for the Classroom Teacher. A course designed in cooperation with the Department of Education to give training in the aspects of speech deemed most helpful to persons intending to become classroom teachers. The cultivation of basic skills with attention to the special needs of the individual student is given careful attention. Three quarter hours. Spring. T. Allred 7. Speech Arts Workshop. A course to provide training with a view to public reading and speaking appearances as an immediate outgrowth of class effort. Both practical services and entertainment values stressed. Both campus and off-campus assignments are contemplated. Registration is subject to approval of the instructor. Three lectures and two laboratory periods a week. One quarter hour. Autumn, Winter, Spring. T. Allred 8. Speech for Recreational Leaders. A course to give basic training in aspects of speech most commonly required of recreational leaders and supervisors. In addition to the making of short speeches of a specialized kind, the student is given special practice in the use of the narrative, the exciting incident, the tale of experience, the anecdote, and the short story. Two quarter hours. Spring. (May not be given.) T. Allred 63 10. Theatre Production. This course is concerned with the study and application of the basic principles of play production as related to: mechanical services of the technical staff and stage crews, basic scene design, fundamentals of scene construction, scene painting, and stage managership; the principles of stage lighting, together with selection of acquisition and maintenance of equipment. Recommended not only for speech majors but for those also who may undertake "auditorium work" as public school teachers or recreational leaders. Three quarter hours. Winter. White 12. Elementary Directing. A course designed to assist the director of school, community, or church plays in the common problems of scripts, the selection of casts, preparation of the director's copy and confronting him as a director. The problems of play selection, editing the prompt book, blocking out the action, rehearsal and performance, basic makeup considerations, etc. The course is recommended not only to speech majors but also to others who may have the responsibilities of directing in church, school, or recreational positions. A course to acquaint the student with the general principles of acting and with proper standards of discrimination in the fields of the theatre. It attempts to develop the student's poise, imagination, and cultural appreciation, as well as to provide him with the techniques necessary to good acting. Laboratory work in the class room and on stage is used as a means of applying practical principles. Two lectures and one laboratory period a week. Three quarter hours. Winter. T. Allred 20. Theatre Workshop. A course devoted to selection, rehearsal, and production of both one-act and full-length plays on a laboratory basis. Registration subject to approval of instructor or successful try-out. Two quarter hours. Autumn, Winter, Spring. T. Allred 21. Radio Speech. A course for beginners in the field of radio speech. It surveys the activities of the radio industry and emphasizes the standards and responsibilities of good broadcasting. Basic radio reading and writing techniques are explained and put into practice in laboratory work. Speech 1, Speech 5, or parallel training are recommended as prerequisites. Two lectures and one laboratory period a week. Three quarter hours. Spring. Farnsworth 24. Radio Work Shop. A laboratory course designed as a community and school service organization to present programs over the local radio stations. It also encourages students to create programs of their own which are of broadcast quality. Only those who qualify in auditions are permitted to enroll. One quarter hour. Autumn, Winter, Spring.
