First, this will be the first year of operation as a four-year institution. Second, as a result of the enrollment of this first senior class the first bachelor's degrees will be awarded at the conclusion of the year. And third, this will be the first year that the institution will operate under the name of Weber State College. Inasmuch as the first classes were held in the original Weber Stake Academy on January 7, 1889, the school year 1963-64 has been designated by the Board of Trustees as the 75th Anniversary Year of the founding of the college. During this diamond jubilee year several special activities are being planned to recognize this important year. Ground was broken for the construction of the new auditorium-fine arts center in January, 1963. This new building, to cost $1,800,000, will be under construction during 1963-64 and will be completed for use for the 1964-65 school year. Bids were opened for the construction of the first dormitories on the new campus on March 27, 1963. These first three dormitory buildings will cost $1,600,000 and will provide housing for 366 students. They will be under construction during 1963-64 and will be ready for use for the 1964-65 school year. It is planned that the second phase of the auditorium-fine arts center, to cost $1,000,000, will be under construction during the 1963-64 year. Also, the new $1,500,000 library should be under construction during the year. These important developments will make the 1963-64 school year one of the most important in the seventy-five years of the history of this college. This catalog describes the educational opportunities available to those who enroll during 1963-64. I trust that those who do enroll will find an academic atmosphere that stimulates learning and fulfills the educational purposes of the college. WILLIAM P. MILLER President 11 |
