Students from most subject areas can receive academic help from the tutors working in the Learning Center. There is no charge to the students for this service. 9. General EducationSeveral general education courses are offered at the Center by departments for students desiring a more individualized approach to academic work. These programs are planned and developed by the academic departments involved and delivered in the Learning Center. Many of the programs of the Center give college credit. STUDENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM The Student Assistance Program is designed to utilize all available resources to retain those students who because of prior academic preparation, economic need and/or racial discrimination normally do not avail themselves of the opportunity of earning a college degree. Generally, the program assists participants and provides counseling, tutorial help, career guidance, social involvement and other developmental educational experiences. Students of need from selected area high schools and those currently enrolled at the College are eligible for program services. Applications and further information may be obtained from the Student Assistance Office. STUDENT HEALTH CENTER The Health Service of Weber State College has been established for the education and protection of students. In the event a student is injured or becomes suddenly ill while on campus, the Office of Campus Police should be called, phone 393-0973. The student will then be transported to his doctor, the Student Health Center, or the hospital, for care. After office hours, the student should call his private physician, or Campus Police for transportation to the hospital. The Student Health Center is located in Annex IV, just north of the Office of Campus Police. The center is open from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. The health staff consists of a part-time physician, who is also a consultant to the counseling staff, and a registered nurse. Treatment and consultation may be arranged for by appointment. Medical care at the Student Health Center is paid from student health service fees. Any further medical care beyond that provided at the Health Center must be paid for by the student or his/her insurance plan. A health and accident policy for students is available only at time of registration at a special rate. This insurance plan is especially designed for students at Weber State College for protection against medical expenses for injury and illness. Unless the student is protected by some other form of insurance, it is strongly urged that he/she take advantage of the low cost insurance plan. Students are encouraged to consult the Health Service on any problem they may have concerning their health. STUDENT HOUSING SERVICE On the Weber State College campus there are four residence halls available to students. Living in the residence halls provides an excellent opportunity for students to live, work, and study together. This becomes a vital part of the college experience. 40 Student Housing Each hall is under the supervision of a head resident couple who are well qualified and trained to work with students. The head residents are assisted by a resident assistant on each floor. Resident assistants are usually junior and senior students.
