The Department of Botany offers courses which provide a departmental major or minor, teaching major or minor and courses which are essential for many professional careers. A major in Botany is designed to prepare a student for a variety of professional careers in secondary schools or institutions of higher learning, in governmental service, in industry, or in research ins'itutions. Botanists are employed in positions such as teacher, conservationist, range manager, plant geneticist, plant physiologist, plant pathologist, mycologist, plant quarantine inspector, taxonomist, museum curator, park ranger, park naturalist, and forest research. Botany is an important adjunct to many professional careers in soil science, horticulture, agronomy, food technology, marine biology, environmental science, water resources, research and weed control technology. This department offers pre-professional training in Agriculture, Forestry and Wildlife Management. Students must continue their education at another institution in order to obtain baccalaureate degrees in these fields. The catalog of the school to which the student plans to transfer should be consulted as a guide in registering for courses at Weber State College. Program: Botany Major and Botany Teaching Major Bachelor Degree I. General Requirements: A. Specific requirements of the college (see index). B. Bachelor Degree General Education requirements (see index). Psychology 101 (5) in the Social Science area is recommended for Teaching majors. C. A minor is required. (Botany Teaching majors should take a minor in Zoology.) D. Botany majors must have a C or better in major courses. E. Botany majors must have an overall G. P. A. of 2.00 or C; Botany Teaching majors must achieve an overall 2.25 G. P. A. F. 183 total hours are required for this degree. G. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). H. Students obtaining a Botany Teaching major must satisfy the School of Education Certification Program. (See Teacher Education Program.) These courses must include the following: 195 (1), 300 (3), 350 (3), 363 (3), 364 (4), 495 (15), 499 (5). II. Specific Requirements: A. Botany courses required (13 credit hours): Botany 110 (5), 112 (5), 499A (1), 499B (1), 499C (1). B. Botany courses to elect from: 1. Select 24 credit hours from at least three of the following four groups: a. Group A: Botany 310 (5), 411 (5). b. Group B: Botany 320 (5), 321 (5), 322 (4), 421 (5). c. Group C: Botany 350 (5), 351 (5), 423 (5). d. Group D: Botany 345 (5), 362 (5). 2. Select 11 additional hours from the following courses: Botany 292 (1-6), 347 (3), 352 (4), 364 (5), 415 (4), 425 (4), 434 (4), 480 (1-5), 483 (1-5), 492 (1-6), 495 (1-5). 180 Natural Sciences Botany C. Program: Botany Departmental Honors I. General Requirements: A. Enroll in the General Honors Program and complete 10 hours of General Honors courses. B. Maintain an overall G. P. A. of 3.3. C. Fulfill requirements for Botany departmental or teaching major. II. Specific Requirements: A. In fulfilling requirements for a botany major take at least 20 credit hours of Botany Honors. B. Complete a Botany Honors Senior Project, either Botany 480 or 483. C. A student may receive Botany Honors credit in the following courses: Botany 310, 320, 322, 345, 350, and 362. D. Permission from the department chairman should be sought before registering in a course for Honors credit. A written agreement should be reached with the appropriate professor regarding the work expected for Honors credit. Program: Botany Minor and Botany Teaching Minor I. General Requirements: A. A grade of C or better in all minor courses. II. Specific Requirements: A. Minimum of 25 credit hours in Botany courses. B. Botany courses required: Botany 110 (5), 112 (5). C. Botany courses to elect from: 1. Botany departmental minors should select 15 credit hours from the following: Botany 310 (5), 320 (5), 321 (5), 322 (5), 345 (5), 347 (3), 350 (5), 351 (5), 362 (5), 364 (5), 411 (5), 415 (4), 421 (5,), 423 (5), 425 (4), 434 (4), 480 (1-5), 483 (1-5), 492 (1-6), 495 (1-5), 499A (1), 499B (1), 499C (1). 2.
