Show The Pioneer Post Volume VIII Issue 1 Marriott-Slaterville City Newsletter January 2006 1570 West 400 North - Phone 627-1919 State of the City Keith H. Butler, Mayor In December, I had the opportunity to present several awards to various individuals in the community. It is my pleasure to recognize these individuals this year in my annual report to the community. The Good Neighbor Award is presented to individuals nominated by their neighbors who make this community beautiful and are model neighbors. This award was presented to Dean and Lois Slater being nominated by Karleen Warner. The H. Orvil Holley Youth Leadership Award was presented to Jonathan Ray Spencer. Jonathan was nominated by Annie Spencer for is community service in collecting emergency response surveys for the Community Emergency Response Team. These surveys will be a valuable resource in the event of an emergency. The Elna Lucas Community History and Culture was presented to two individuals for helping preserve and document the history and culture of Marriott-Slaterviile. Shirley Smout received this award for her efforts in collecting historical information on early community pioneers Steven and Sylvester Perry. Michael Murphy also received the Elna Lucas Community History and Culture for her contemporary efforts in documenting achievements of individuals in the community. Michael wrote poetic tributes giving a brief account of accomplishments for graduates in the community. These tributes were presented to each graduate as a lifetime keepsake. m Ito received the Darrell Mecham Outstanding Community Service Award. Jim has volunteered since 1999 as the Director of the Community Services Department for the City. This Department is charged with community activities, parks and recreation, and other community services. Jim also donates a few hours each week as a receptionist at the city offices. As we start off 2006, our city has a new Community Resource Officer (CRO). Brook Fowers is the new deputy sheriff assigned to our city as a CRO. The CRO is a deputy sheriff assigned to a city who is responsible for special law enforcement needs, programs, Neighborhood Watch, and community relations. Deputy Fowers has served in this position for Washington Terrace. He is also the EMT Coordinator for the Weber County Sheriff's Office. His experience will be put to work now in our community. There are approximately 7 deputies assigned to our precinct that serve our law enforcement needs. Residents interested in participating in Neighborhood Watch and the Sheriff's Advisory Committee are invited to contact the city office. Legislative Report Dennis Ilium, City Council The legislative body of the community is the city council. The council consists of five (5) members. Two (2) are elected from the east district, two (2) from the west district, and one (1) at-large. The council makes the law that the executive branch enforces. The council is also charged with approving the budget and may conduct oversight inquiries. I encourage residents to contact their council members to give input on our successes and failures. If legislation needs to be changed, then voice your opinion. The council relies on public input in order to help formulate policy. This is how democracy functions its best in local government. |
