Show The Pioneer Post Volume VIII Issue 2-3 Marriott-Slaterville City Newsletter February-March 2006 1570 West 400 North - Phone 627-1919 Neighborhood Watch - CERT At a recent Neighborhood Watch meeting several issues were discussed that residents need to be aware of to better protect their family and property. Identity theft is a problem in our community, especially involving mail. Personal checks have been stolen out of residents mail boxes. Mailbox vandalism also continues to be a problem. Rural homes and homes on dead end streets are common targets. Mail thefts have occurred in broad daylight while people are at work. The postal service is greatly concerned with mail theft and vandalism. The postal service recently met with city staff on this issue. As a result of these problems, all new subdivisions in the city will have neighborhood mailboxes provided by the postal service that are locked. Existing residents are encouraged to get together with neighbors to establish their own neighborhood mail boxes. The postal service will pay for the secured boxes and installation. The city will provide public right-of-way at a common location. A minimum of eight residents for these neighborhood mail boxes is required. Contact Jennifer Allen, USPS, at 791-7855 or Ryan Burnett, USPS, at 791-2796 to start protecting your mail from theft. Public safety officials would like residents to make sure that their address is clearly visible from the road. People have called 9-1-1 in emergencies and public safety responders have not been able to easily locate the home because the address is not displayed or visible. This delays response to calls for service in an emergency. Utility and recreational trailers thefts are on the rise. Thieves are backing into yards and hooking up to trailers and driving off in a matter of minutes. Neighborhood Watch suggests that residents with trailers on their property put these items in a garage, use a "tongue lock" which costs about $50, or take other preventive measures. There is a multi-week Citizen Emergency Management Team (CERT) class starting March 8 at 6:30 at the Plain City Hall. Call Linda Spencer, Sheriff's Office, at 778-6602 to register. Cost is $25, reimbursable on completion. Earthquake preparedness training is on March 30, 2006. Marilyn Huff, State Emergency Management, will speak at 6:30 p.m. in Training Room A, at the Sheriff's Office, 721 W. 12th Street.
