D ixon kapple's ogden highi school Tigers advanced into sec¬ond place in the- Ogden division court race last night by handing the Box Elder five an artistic trim¬ming on the We¬ber gymnasium court, 49 to 26. j The "Orange ; Streaks" dished out another brand of super basket¬ball and were nev¬er headed. From & the first period until the final whistle the Kapplemen were out 8 in front and offer¬ed a marvelous brand of ball. KAPPLE Ogden held a 27 to 10 advantage at the close of the first half. In the final periods of play Coach Kapple substituted frequently and gave practically every member of thg squad a chance to show. "Red" Hilton at center and Stitt on the forward line were the big? guns for the locals. Hilton collected 17 points during the contest and Stitt registered 15. The all-around team play of thef Tigers was one of the features of the battle. Another sample of the old- time Tiger spirit gave the contest plenty of flavor and had much to do with the fine work of the courtiers, Lee for the Bees collected 11 points and led the visitors in tha scoring department. By defeating Box Elder last nigh the Kapplemen evened the count with the Bees for the season in caga competition. Weber high and Davis high clash in the other feature contest of tha week tonight on the Warrior court. In a recent game at Kaysville We¬ber forced the league leaders into extra periods and another stubborn affair is expected this evening. The Warriors and Davis take tha floor at 7:30 p. m. Feb. 17, 1930 DAVIS SWAMPED BY WEBER On Friday Davis went down be¬fore Weber.. Now we still have a chance to get first place. But we must first overcome Weber this week. This game against Weber will be even more crucial than the one against Davis. One opportunity was lost when our team played so gloriously against Davis. Don't let another chance slip by, students. Let's have everybody out to Weber the night of the big game. Those who saw the game against Box El¬der on Thursday know how good our team is. But with all their improve¬ment a stiff battle will ensue when the Weberites take us on. They also are improved. They had to be to beat Davis. So every muscle must be strained to give Weber another trouncing. HOP IN VIEW The last week before the hop has arrived. If you haven't bought your ticket see an officer or go down and obtain one from Sarge Mayer. We must have a big ticket' sale to meet expenses, cadets. It's your dance and is yours to make a success. If you haven't a date get one tonight. There are still plenty of anxious girls who are only too glad to go. The crack company is in top notch condition and is out to give us the best exhibition of any crack com¬pany before or since. CONGRATULATIONS No matter what the odds are or what the game may be, Box Elder has one of the gamest and finest student bodies in the state. Last year when Ogden went down to the state tournament, after having won the regional, championship, they were the first to telegraph us a word of congratulations and a note of praise. This year at all games they have given fine exhibitions of sportsmanship. They cheer foes as well as friend, and play a fine, clean brand of ball. CHATTER AND CHAFF If you see some of the officers i losing weight this week don't be! alarmed. Remember the, sponsors' banquet is only four days away. The first five minutes are the hardest. Ask Ted Mattson. All the cadets- are excused from wearing their uniforms for the re¬mainder of the week. Now every boy can display his new permanent wave in all his glory without tear of rebuke from "Sarge'' or the colo¬nel. Hod Nebeker is a big political j boss. He owes his immense pull and ; popularity to three things. Do you j know them? j Dribbling Jake Olish says thab they ought to provide cushions on the bench. . Tribe is sweet on sugar. Sugar, however, doesn't crave Tribe. What seems to be the matter with sweet¬meats, Tribe? Feb. 18, 1930 ogden High School News Power, like a desolating pestilence, pollutes whate'er it touches.—Shel¬ley. BOUGHT YOUR TICKET? If you haven't got your ticket for the hop, do so tomorrow. If it is possible tickets for dances should be bought before the dance. Only by this method can the estimated profit be reckoned. So do the R. O. T. C. a big favor and get your ticket early. Let's have a big crowd to support one of our prettiest so¬cial affairs. The hop is a dance we can well be proud of and one we can't afford to miss attending. Come on, gang! Everybody go to the hop. Wear your uniform if you have one. leave other formalities at home and turn out to the best time you have had this year. GIVES PRETTY DANCE Last Friday, Central Junior gave its annual valentine party. It was a very artistic and beautiful dance, Central. You deserve commenda¬tion. Your queen was lovely and the maids were very sweet. The whole thing was a well-worked-out piece and to think that we have such prospective go-getters to come to high school next year is very heartening. May you continue to have the enthusiasm you seem to show at your functions. ASSEMBLY WEDNESDAY A special assembly is called for Wednesday morning at 9:30 o'clock. The Rev. John B. Poucher, a noted speaker of the middle west, will ad¬dress us. GAME AGAINST WEBER they tell us that Weber County High is gunnin' for us. They arc i out to avenge a defeat of some weeks i ago. Can they do it? We'll tell the cock-eyed world they can't. Not if the team plays as well as they did against Box Elder and the grand- stands support the team as well as they have done. We'll take Weber on and then we'll whip Davis again and then we'll take the regional championship and go to the state tournament and do wonders there. Let's show the world what a real dark horse can do. Everybody out to Weber County to help the team. AUNT JANE'S CORNER Dear Aunt Jane: In response to an article written to you asking how much an officer misses in not hav-ing a sponsor, I beg leave to dis¬agree that the sole purpose of a sponsor's duty is sewing on buttons and taking her cadet officer to ban¬quets. We flatter ourselves that we serve some purpose, however small, in the making of the Ogden unit the first in the Ninth corps area. What do you think? A SPONSOR. Dear Miss—You are right. The girls do contribute a valuable por¬tion to the maintaining of a fine R. O. T. C. unit. There is absolute¬ly no doubt about that. I believe the officer was merely kidding when he asked how much he war missing. If you were ever a "Looie" you would sympathize with him: what is so hard to take is not to be able to have a thing you want very bad¬ly? That is his case. He wanted a sponsor, too. but the fates were against him. Don't worry about the worth of sponsors. AUNT JANE. CHATTER AND CHAFF Everybody happy? Max wants to know. The whipcord industry seems to be having a boom just now. So do the white collar and the shoe shin-ing businesses. Don't you know why? Aw, quit your kidding. We relish seeing Majors Ward and Budge doing the kangaroo dip to¬gether. If you do, don't miss the liop. Do you feel lazy about this time of the year, fellow students? Do you long for the great open spaces, and. do you sigh for spring? If you do you know how Es Smith feels all the tune. Queen, queen, whose girl is going to be queen? IT RUNS IN THE FAMILY Another family which has been a big shot in the history of O. H. S. is the McConnell family. Do you re- xjiember Winifred McConnell, the regimental sponsor of three years ago? She was also some debater as girls go. Now she is at Boulder, Colo. Perhaps less beautiful but none the less a part of the McConnell family is Beecher, one of this year's crop of shining examples of budding manhood. He was on the debating team last year and also is quite an orator. He belongs to Forum and We 13 and is an officer of the R. O. T. C. in C company. Tomorrow how about some more famous brothers? Say the Lowhams. WE 13 Regular meeting of We 13 was called to order by President Bramwell. Very interesting talks were given by Mr. Mairs on "What makes it fly." "Talking Pictures in an Air¬plane" by Mr. Stewart. "Using i Parachutes on Airplanes" by Mr. Bramwell We 13 pledged itself to support ! the Classicalia to the fullest extent. , Mr. Cartwright and Mr. Stewart were appointed to serve on the Classicalia committee. It won't be long now until we will he have our club pins. Warning for m girls—Beware, girls, do not lead gr members of We 13 out of the club, w; If you do not understand this new tb ruling ask any member for particu- or lars. de HOWARD TRIBE, Reporter. su in ORANGE STREAKS The Tigers will be called upon to at show their mettle in the coming game with Weber. This game will be played on Saturday because of " the cadet hop and th.e fact that Weber has a game scheduled for to- q night. This will be a real thriller . and a fight to the finish. We car- 1! ried the winning banner with a a one-point lead in the last game with c Weber and were defeated by Davis y with the same margin. Weber gave ' Davis their first trouncing of the c season on Friday night with a score of 35 to 36. This game wall require all the support we can possibly give, j- but being on Saturday we will have difficulty in getting the backing the team will require. Please come and r do your part. Give the team your a undivided support, and they will 0 surely repay you with a real fight- t ing game. The second place in the contest depenos upon the result of n this game. There is also a small j, possibility that Ogden can squeeze into first place in the Ogden divi- 0 sion race. We did it last year, stu- dents, and it's possible to repeat it a : this year. Hie game will be played at Weber County High at 7:43 o'clock c Feb. 19, 1930 Ogden High School News It is much easier to be critical ] than to be correct.—Disraeli. DAY AFTER TOMORROW The day after tomorrow, the an- ' nual cadet hop will again be here. 1 All the cadets are urged to attend and to help make this hop the best one in O. H. S. history. It is a pity ' that some of the students do not at- ' tend the school functions. To show everyone a good time is the ambi- ' tion of every organization which 1 gives one of our dances. They arc i for you, students, and they are yours to support. Let's have a big 1 crowd at the hop on Friday evening. : Every effort is being made that this dance will be one of the cleanest, best, finest dances Ogden High has given. May every son of Ogden come. And our alumni! We wish to extend to you the heartiest invita¬tion to attend the best dance since you were at Ogden High. Come and make this hop one to be remem¬bered always. OUR BAND 1 To the members of of the band we wash to express appreciation for the splendid spirit shown by turning out i en masse to help the cheering and singing at the games. It is easily seen that none of the other high school bands in the division can compare with ours. This is no slam to the other bands, as there are some excellent ones in this part of the state, especially the one at Box Elder. But we maintain that Mr. Hanson has developed a group of:: musicians unrivaled in Utah. Fine " work. ORATORY Miss Stohl is delighted with the orations of the students who have entered the oratorical contests. If they live up to their present fore¬cast Ogden High will certainly place a student in the regional finals in the state. We wish the students who are doing oratorical work the highest success. There are few types of extracurricular activity which de- velop the student so much as do the u oratorical contests. If you are not yet entered and have a desire to do so, run up to Miss Stohl's room and get the lineup on what you must do. You will never regret your effort. FOREIGN LANGUAGES If it has been asked once it has! been asked a million times, "What! good will the studying of a foreign) language do me?" In return it may be answered that of all the subjects one takes in high school, the most thoroughlly interesting if taken with the right attitude are the language courses. Aside from mere interest, lowever, the learning of one or nore foreign languages will be of jreat benefit to you in a cultural vay, if you have any desire to make his world a world of unity and co- n-dinate thought, if you have any lesire to travel, if you will eer pur¬sue walks of life which will lead you nto foreign trade or life, or if you lave a desire to continue in the in¬stitutions of liighei; learning. It is ' an essential thing that every ,stu« dent have at least two years of for¬eign language and more is desirable. Ogden High offers facilities for four languages, Latin, French, German and Spanish. You will do well to continue with three or even more years of a language. The study will be of great help to you. AUNT JANE'S CORNER Dear Aunt Jane: It seems to me that being con¬nected with some school function or activity means cutting yourself out of a great deal of other activity and that the school shows very little ap¬preciation of those students who do most for the students. An example is the basketball team. In return for their work they get the pleasure of abstinence from dances no mat¬ter how much they might wish to attend. Can't something be done to show the appreciation of the school of such' students? WONDERING. Answer: As the saying goes, virtue is largely its own reward. There Is almost no intrinsic value to be gained from participation in school activities. However, there is the sat¬isfaction of doing something to make youfr school the best possible and then there is a big chance for personal gain in a physical or men¬tal way. Don't worry about the benefits derived therefrom. The school gives at the end of the year ten block O's to the ten outstanding students of the year. These are prized more highly than anything else that could be given and certain¬ly compensate the students receiving „ them for their efforts. It seems rather sad that the fellows on the team should have to sacrifice so beautiful a dance, but it makes real men out of them to give up a per¬sonal desire for the gain of their school. Don't worry about them.1 Their duty makes them all the finer for it. AUNT JANE. FAMOUS BROTHERS Do you know Dave and Eldori Lowham, two more of our famous brothers in school? Dave is captain of A company and a right good one, too. He has worked hard with his men and the company is showing marked progress. Eldon is a junior. He is a sergeant in B company. Watch out for him next year. He might be a captain; wonders never seem to cease. Brothers play a unique role at O. H. S. Some of our finest friends are brothers and some of the outstanding activities are in¬dulged in not alone by one member of a family but by two. CHATTER AND CHAFF i It is whispered that maybe Doc Stone will get into the lineup yet. He was some guard last year and if he gets in we may see some more; of his flashy dribbling. Hell have a hard time of it though. Frannle and Les are doing their jobs to per-fection. Beth Peck is laid up for another few days with that bad ankle of hers. O. H. S. misses you, Beth. Hurry back. The girls haven't anything on seme of the fellows for gay clothing worn. The boys are taking advan¬tage of their week in civilian cloth¬ing and their apparel in some cases talks so loudly that mufflers will lhave to be resorted to. For a few moments the other, morning Charlene was the most . sought after girl in school. About J ten boys wanted Charlene and want¬ed her badly. They just heard of j the orders of coach.
