Tuesday, March 1. We came from Monterray to Valles 317 miles today. We are staying at Casa Grande a very pretty or unique hotel, on Spanish Arctn. Our U.S. Dollar is worth three dollars & sixty cts Mexico Money. To day drive has been interesting the native huts thatched roofs and many very poor Mexicans & Indians. We see them plowing with cattle and small Burrows. The road is very good but one must drive carefully as so many cattle & horses, sheep & goats are on the road it is dangerous to drive at night. We have good room & bath for three dollars. Had a good dinner tea bone stake etc of one dollar each. We are all quite tired as the day has been sultry. Tropical you might say. Saw the people packing tomatoes, oranges, sugar cane and beautiful shrubery etc. retire early. Wednesday, March 2. Mexico City. Left Valles about 8 this A.M. it rained some during the night and still some rain. Climate tropical dense shrubery. 270 mi to Mexico City. A wonderful high way but almost continuous dug way but 30 ft wide well banked many hundreds of turns we go from a little above sea level at Valles to slightly over 8.000 ft elevation. Stopped at Thos & Charlie a very interesting place where we visite Indian huts & see the home life of these poor people mud floors and thatched roof etc. & people with little clothing bare feet & children some of them with nothing to cover them below the waist line. Royal took some pictures. I gave little toys to quite a number of children thro here. We marveled at how the poor natives could exist under such conditions. We were all good sailors. We ate lunch in our car. Arrived in Mexico at 6 P.M.
