Show 348 Continuing Education & Community Services Program Directors: Brian Stecklein, 801-626-6787; Peg Wherry, 801-626-6990 Weber State University Continuing Education and Community Services offers courses, seminars, workshops and conferences each year, working closely with the universityis academic departments and colleges; with local and state government agencies; and with professional, trade, and special interest associations. These learning partnerships are conducted in the most convenient format for their purposes: classroom lectures, laboratories, workplace practicums, online delivery, or by mail. The division serves the mission of Weber State University through learning partnerships with the institutionis non- traditional constituencies. Continuing Education facilitates delivery of learning experiences in a variety of alternative formats, at convenient times and places, with appropriate student support services that meet the needs of its diverse clientele. A network of collaborative working relationships reach pre-college students; working, re-entering and older adult learners; business and industry; governmental agencies; non-profit groups; public education organizations, and professional associations. Continuing Education addresses regional and national needs for education and professional development. Student convenience determines the locations for continuing education classes, training and conferences. Classes are taught on the main campus in Ogden after 4:30 p.m.; at the WSU-Davis Campus in Layton; WSU-North Center in Pleasant View; WSU- West Center in Roy; WSU-Morgan Center in Morgan and at public high schools throughout the Weber, Davis and Morgan counties. Distance learning offers independent study and online classes to serve students in remote areas and those who prefer to work at their own pace. These learning experiences range from academic degree programs and courses delivered in cooperation with the university's academic departments to customized noncredit courses that draw on community resources. Students in these classes can earn high school and college credits at the same time. The Concurrent Enrollment credits/ grades become part of the studentis permanent WSU transcript. Early College Program Early College allows students to fulfill both high school and university graduation requirements at the same time. The program is an innovative educational opportunity for students to enroll for classes at the university while they are still in high school. University faculty teach classes, and the credits/grades from the Early College program become part of the studentis permanent WSU transcript. Students are responsible for the university tuition and fees, and Utah colleges and most out-of-state and private universities will accept the Early College credits. Travel Study/Study Abroad Students who have experienced living and learning on the social and educational terms of another culture will be broadened in ways impossible to achieve on an American campus. International travel experiences have been shown to improve the studentis performance in the classroom. Contract Education for International Students WSU Continuing Education presents a variety of academic, cultural and United States travel experiences for international students through contracts with corporations and educational institutions in other countries. WSU students can pursue bachelor and associate of science degrees through evening and off-campus credit programs facilitated by WSU Continuing Education. Sites have included the WSU-Ogden Campus, WSU-Davis Campus in Layton, WSU-North Center in Pleasant View, WSU-West Center in Roy, WSU- Morgan Center, Clearfield High School, Davis High School and Northridge High School, as well as through articulation agreements with the Davis Applied Technology College, Utah Valley State College, and Salt Lake Community College. The staff connects organizations and individuals with comprehensive training programs to improve performance, increase productivity, decrease costs and get bottom- line results. The department provides both customized training and public enrollment programs that focus on performance improvement and measurable results. 349 Certificate Programs The professional development certification program partners with the Educational Society for Resource Management (APICS), and the American Society for Quality (ASQ) to deliver preparation courses for certification examinations. Courses are designed for individuals with knowledge and experience who wish to receive professional recognition or expand their skills in these fields. Utah Law Enforcement Academy Program Administrator: KentPaskins 801-626-7949, or toll-free 800-848-7770 ext. 7949 WSU Continuing Education is a sanctioned provider of the Utah Law Enforcement Academy, the basic training program for certification of law enforcement officers. The academy is divided into two modules. The first, or core, provides training required for certification of reserve, corrections or special function officers. The second module continues with training for certification of an officer with full police powers (police, deputy sheriff, Utah Highway Patrol, etc.). Two sessions per year are offered at WSU starting in June and January each year. Classes meet Monday through Thursday, from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. For information about the program, see weber.edu/cj/default.html. WSU Online is currently delivering quality educational experiences for individuals who can benefit from online education. Online students enjoy instant access, multimedia enhancements, web resources and online discussions participating in many interactive educational opportunities. WSU Online opened in the fall of 1997 with 20 courses, has expanded to over 250 in 2001, and adds new courses and activities each academic term. This allows students to complete course work at home (or anywhere) at their own convenience.
