Friday, February 25. St David. We left Mesa last evening and drove to Tucon arrived at 830 P.M. & stayed at Hotel Pioneer an exceptionaly fine place, but a bit high 7.14 for each of us. After we looked over the town and liked it ever so much we drove to Douglas & had lunch. We stopped at Saint David before lunch & saw some of my mothers relatives. My grandfather Dudley Justin Merrill moved here with his family in 1876 and died here many years ago. Saw his grave also Aunt Lucy Anas and many others of Phileomre Merrils family. We arrived at El Paso Texas at 7 P.M. have fine rooms at the Cortez Hotel for 3.50 4.00 each. A very fine up to date place privte bath etc. After looking around town some retired early. Seal cards. Saturday, February 26. Left El Paso at 11 A.M. after seeing the City with Bro Green an L.D.S. missionary showing us about. He also had breakfast with us. we went over to Junes in Mexico. One could not emagine such squaler and poverty. So many little children under fed & under clothed. Adobe houses of one or two rooms and very old and dilapidated. Visited the old fort where Villa was located for six month and tried to capture Jurez but was finaly killed by his own men. We ate lunch at Von Horn and it was a very nice little hotel to be off in the Desert. We have traveled over good roads but much the same country & very lonesome. Made 304 mi today. Royal & Cleone did the driving. We arrived at Sanderson a small town and found a fair place to stay all night. All fine.
