Show 27 CHARLESTON DEAD IN STORM Another 107 Left Injured By Two Direction Tornado CHARLESTON, S. C., Oct. 1 This 268 year old city of colonial landmarks, ancient gardens and wrought iron gates continued today to remove the ravages of two tornadoes that struck within a few minutes from opposite directions Thursday and killed 27 persons. Four companies of national guardsmen and soldiers and marines from the forts guarded the 30 block area of destruction from looters. Of the 107 severely injured, 38 were in a critical condition. Red Cross workers found 72 homes and buildings demolished; more than 100 damaged. The loss was estimated at 2,000,000. Eleven hundred were homeless. The dead included 15 whites and 12 Negroes. Most of the bodies were found in the vicinity of the city market, where slaves once stood on auction blocks. The streets were strewn with fallen trees, smashed automobiles, timbers and mortar. |
