TREVITHICK It is recommended that a student pursuing a major in English Language and Literature complete English 39, 40, and 41. It is recommended that students who present for entrance less than the equivalent of twenty-five quarter hours in one foreign language pursue such language until they have earned a minimum of twenty-five quarter hours. COURSES OF INSTRUCTION Rhetoric and Composition ENGLISH 1. Rhetoric and Composition. Devoted to training in the preparation of the research paper and to study and application of the principles of exposition and argumentation. Five quarter hours. ENGLISH 2. Rhetoric and Composition. Confined to a study and application of the principles of description and narration. Five quarter hours. ENGLISH 3. Exposition. Restricted to an intensive study of expository composition. Five quarter hours. ENGLISH 4. Narration. Devoted to a study of narrative technique, appreciation of the short story as a literary form, and practice in writing of the short story. Five quarter hours ENGLISH 5. Argumentation. Critical study of the logical WEBER COLLEGE 31 processes of thinking and practice in handling of evidence, detecting of fallacies, and presentation of material. Five quarter hours. ENGLISH 6. Journalism. Designed to equip the student with a knowledge of the fundamentals of journalistic theory and to afford practical training in newspaper and magazine writing and editing. Laboratory experience is had through working with reporters on local dailies and production of the school paper. Five quarter hours. ENGLISH 7. The Forms of Public Address. A practical course devoted to a mastery, by study and use, of the forms of public address. Five quarter hours. ENGLISH 8. The One-Act Play Devoted to the writing of one-act plays, the most creditable of which are presented in the Weber Little Theatre. Five quarter hours. (Not given 1934-35.) ENGLISH 9. Poetry Designed to give training in the appreciation of poetic expression and practices in the art of poetic writing. Five quarter hours. ENGLISH 10. Business Correspondence. Designed to furnish the student with a technical knowledge of business letter forms and to give instruction in the principles and psychology of business correspondence. Three quarter hours.
