Wilson and Palomar Observatories have been studying a kind of “star” which is farther away, and brighter, than anything known before. They have been named Quasi-Stellar Radio Sources. This abbreviates into QSRS, which produces the new word Quasars. Science being what it is these days, the new maybe-stars are not named after legendary beasts or after the men who found them, but are identified by letters and numbers. One of them, called 3C-147, is “many billions of light-years away.” (A light-year is the distance that light travels in one year, or nearly 6 trillion miles.) Dr. Jesse L. Greenstein and Dr. Maarten Schmidt, who have been studying the phenomena, are deeply engaged in an effort to draw together all that is known about them, and to investigate further. According to press reports, some astronomers think the Quasars may be useful in determining the dimensions of the universe. And so we learn steadily more about the wonders of the heavens.
