Division of Mathematics and Physical Sciences ■ Merlon L. Stevenson, Chairman To preserve and strengthen the democracy in which we live it is necessary to prepare trained personnel in science, engineering, and technical fields. It is imperative that the scientist, the engineer, and the technician receive not only a thorough technical training, but also a well-rounded education concerning the environment in which he lives with special emphasis upon professional ethics, straight thinking, intellectual honesty, and moral fiber. The critical shortage of trained personnel, particularly in the various branches of engineering, sciences, and technical fields, presents an opportunity for anyone who has an interest in and the ability for achieving this training. The student who qualifies will be in a position to serve his country and himself well. The division offers courses and curriculums to serve the following major groups of students: 1. Those who desire to transfer to a senior institution at the end of two years and who major in mathematics or the following physical sciences: chemistry, geography, geology, or physics; or in the professional fields of chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical, or aeronautical engineering; or in the professional mineral industries programs of mining, metallurgy, geology, mineralogy, or meteorology. 2. Non-science majors who desire to round out their education and to meet group requirements with courses in physical science and mathematics. 3. Those who desire to complete their formal education and enter employment in technical and sub-professional fields at the end of two years, and who need special two-year programs and curriculums in architectural technology and general engineering technology. A student majoring in the Division of Mathematics and Physical Sciences is urged to take interest inventory and the special aptitude tests that are recommended by the respective departments, and consult with an adviser prior to registration. Recommended tests and inventories: It is recommended that all students of the divsion take the KUDER-INTEREST INVENTORY; COOPERATIVE ENGLISH TEST; COOPERATIVE MATHEMATICS TESTS; and prospective engineers should take the PRE- ENGINEERING ABILITY TEST. Special tests may be advisable in certain instances.
