During his life he had been an educator, administrator, church leader and international ambassador of good will. To Weber State College he was above all, a trusted friend, loyal supporter and distinguished alumnus. In 1889 at the age of sixteen David O. McKay. rode his horse down the canyon from the little town of Huntsville in Ogden Valley to enroll in the old Weber Academy. He was an outstanding student of the school from 1889 to 1893 and after additional education and missionary service abroad, he returned as a faculty member to his beloved Weber in 1899. David O. McKay taught with the same enthusiasm that has always been the mark of his life and in 1902 was made principal of the school. From 1902 until 1906 he was both principal and teacher to scores of eager students who listened enthralled to his lessons or followed his vigorous lead in any number of school activities. David O. McKay would have spent his entire life as a teacher, so committed was he to the improvement of young minds, but a call came to him in 1906 that by his standards he could not refuse. He was asked, at the tender age of 32, to sit on the Council of Twelve Apostles of the Mormon Church. An incident occurred at the time of his calling that gives us insight into his great devotion to education in general and to Weber College in particular. He made a promise to a group of students whom he had just begun to teach that he would stay with them until they had completed the course. To keep his promise it was necessary for him to commute from Salt Lake City to Ogden each day for two years, he did keep his promise and remained as a teacher until 1908. From 1908 until 1922 he was a trustee of the college and a prime mover in the programs to improve the school. David O. McKay’s association with Weber has spanned its entire history. Renowned as an educator and teacher his entire career in the field of education was spent at Weber.
