Carruth Michael Weber State resurrected the spring alumni-varsity football game this year to the delight of the old timers and the discomfort of the new crop of Wildcats. Forty eight former Weber State gridders answered the invitation sent out by the Athletic department and the Alumni office, to return and take part in this spring classic. The activities began with a banquet for all the returning ball players and their partners at the Holiday Inn in Ogden the night before the contest. The banquet was sponsored by the Alumni Association and was attended by members of the college administration, the athletic staff and the Alumni board of directors in addition to the honored guests. Coach Sark Arslanian and his staff fielded a small and relatively inexperienced team on Saturday evening to test the larger alumni squad. In doing so the Weber Varsity unveiled the new Texas “Y” or wishbone offense that will be used this fall for the first time. Sark’s young wildcats showed some good depth in the backfield, burning the alums early in the game on the option play. Weber State’s scrambling Dale Mager worked the wishbone to perfection in the first half, keeping the alumni defense off balance while the varsity put 17 points on the scoreboard. President Senior Class President development when 15 line backer Greg Crowshaw alums managed 14 points in the first half to keep the game within reach, but at the intermission it seemed to be the varsity’s night. During the halftime break, amid the groaning and panting, the oldtimers pulled the defensive strategy together and made the second round a different story. While the varsity defense had been the difference in the first half, holding the alums to a stingy 42 yards on the ground, experience prevailed in the second stanza. The Alumni defensive unit sparked by Greg Crowshaw, Lyle Johnston and Mitch Gainer, persistently read the option to stop the varsity ground attack and hold the scrambling Dale Mager to a minus 13 yards. The Alumni offense was fired up with the hustling of little Ezra Hookano and the strong right arm of Paul Waite. All four alumni touchdowns came through the air; Waite hit Henry Owens on an eight yard pass and then teamed up with Mark Laughrey, who had a great night, for touchdowns of 8, 23, and 28 yards. The bigger offensive line of the grad team anchored by Jim Schmedding, Polo Afuvai, Barry Donovan, Gary Rohmer, John Knight and Bill Sowders gave Waite all the time he needed to unlimber and connect with some deadly passing. The alumni coaching assignment was handled by Bob Peck, former coach of the Las Vegas Cowboys of the Continental league with Jim Hassell from Ben Lomond High school and WSC Alumni Director, Mike Macfarlane assisting. Coach Arslanian’s varsity showed the Weber fans a few new wrinkles with several individuals contributing outstanding performances. For a group of new people in their first spring drills the 71 Wildcats looked very promising. In addition to the elusive Dale Mager, people to watch in the fall, appear to be Randy McDougall now shifted to a linebacker, Dave Lofgreen, John Smith, Bob Jones, Tom Morgan, Carl Barbeau, Don Ritchey, Dave Taylor, Clayton Ah Quin and a host of new running backs. Promotional credit is due several people for the success of this spring grid game. Each fan attending was served a barbecue turkey lunch which was included in the price of admission. A hearty thanks for all the work going into that portion goes to Assistant Athletic Director Gary Crompton who shouldered the load for most of the weeks events. Gary Plyer and Dee Wight from Ogden Poultry provided the turkey with other products provided by Dee Smith of Smiths Food King Markets; Bus Wilson of Country Club Food and Ben Day of Coca Cola. The Utah Turkey Marketing Board contributed promotional backing and Dr. Draper from Logan prepared and served the delicious turkey barbecue. The renewing of the spring Varsity Alumni game created a good deal of interest among the alumni and varsity players as well as the fans who attended and it appears that this will be an annual affair to exhibit to the public the new grid squad for the fall season.
