Foundations of Teaching for Cultural and Language Differences (2) This course will address the nature of pluralism in American Society, including but not limited to exploration of multiculturalism, bilingualism, first and second language acquisition and instructional strategies. Second Language Acquisition: Theories and Implementation (3) This course explores second language acquisition processes, current theories, and effective strategies as a knowledge base in planning appropriate curriculum and instruction for English language learners. Conducting Qualitative Research (3) Designed as an introduction to the philosophy, theory, and methodology of qualitative research. Foundations in Special Education (3) This course will cover the history of special education/disability, characteristics of learners and life span issues, major issues and trends including laws and legislative mandates. This practicum experience will introduce students to the IEP process. Students will also practice collaboration and consultation skills in a general education classroom. MEduc 6530. Principles and Applications of Special Education Assessment (3) Administer, score, and interpret norm-referenced assessments instruments, analyze in combination with data from other assessment processes, and use to determine eligibility and develop educational programs. This practicum experience emphasizes the diagnostian's role of a special educator. Managing Student Behavior and Teaching Social Skills (3) Current issues, practices, and application of a variety of approaches for behavior change, discipline and management of the classroom environment, and the teaching of appropriate social skills. In s special education setting students will implement the least restrict interventions appropriate for specific individuals, identify realistic goals for personal and social behavior, and teach social skills lessons.
