Show Humanities Foreign Languages Program: Foreign Language Departmental Honors I. General Requirements: A. Enroll in General Honors and complete at least 10 hours of General Honors courses B. Maintain an overall G. P. A. of 3.3. C. Fulfill requirements for departmental or teaching majors in French, German, or Spanish. II. Specific Requirements: A. In fulfilling the requirements for a Foreign Language Major take at least 15 credit hours on an Honors basis. B. Complete a Foreign Language Senior Project. C. A student may receive Foreign Language Honors credit in any Foreign Language upper division course. D. Permission from the department chairman should be sought before registering in a course for Honors credit. A written agreement should be reached with the appropriate professor regarding the work expected for Honors credit. (See Composite and Interdepartmental Programs.) Asian Studies MinorThe Department of Foreign Languages participates in the Asian Studies Minor Program. A student who wishes to participate should indicate his desire to do so with the departmental Asian Studies representative who will help the student work out a proper combinaton of courses to fit his particular needs. (See Composite and Interdepartmental Programs.) Latin American Studies Minor ProgramThe Department of Foreign Languages participates in the Latin American studies minor program. A student who wishes to participate should indicate his desire to do so with the departmental Latin American Studies representative who will help the student work out a proper combination of courses to fit his particular needs. (See Composite and Interdepartmental Programs.) FOREIGN LANGUAGE COURSES OF INSTRUCTION FRENCH COURSES 101, 102, 103. First Year French (5-5-5) Listening and speaking- skills receive primary emphasis, although reading and writing are an integral part of the program. Courses are sequential, and the previous course is a prerequisite. Five lectures and two 1-hour labs a week. A W S HC201, HU202, HU203. Second Year French (3-3-3) Grammar and composition of intermediate level and progressively advanced reading from well-known authors. Continued emphasis on listening and speaking skills. It is recommended that French 214, 215, and 216 be taken concurrently with this series. Courses are sequential and should be taken in order. Prerequisite: French 103 or equivalent. A W S 209. Travel and Study Abroad (3) Language, culture and history of France taught in Europe by members of the Weber State College faculty during summer tours arranged by the Foreign Language Department. Su HU214, HU215, HU216. Conversational French (2-2-2) Intensive development of oral expression and active vocabulary through pronunciation drills, controlled discussions on subjects of current interest, and oral practice on assigned topics, vocabulary, idioms, and cultural items. French 201, 202, and 203 should be taken concurrently with the series. Courses are sequential, and it is recommended that they be taken in order. Prerequisite: French 103 or equivalent. A W S 292. Short Courses, Workshops, Institutes and Special Programs (1-6) In order to provide flexibility and to meet many different needs, a number of specific offerings are possible using this catalog number. When the number is used it will be accompanied by a brief and specific descriptive title. French Phonetics (2) An advanced course in principles of French phonetics, analysis and correction of faulty pronunciation, and techniques of teaching French phonetics for teaching majors and minors. Methods of Teaching a Foreign Language (3) A practical course in up-to-date techniques in teaching foreign languages. Must be taken prior to commencing student teaching or similar training. Senior Year Language Studies (3) Advanced studies in grammar, composition, translation and linguistics. Prerequisites: French 304, 305 and 306. (Offered alternate years.) A 420.
