Show Student Services Student Services • General Information consult a facility schedule for open recreation available at the Swenson Gym. Weber State I.D. cards required during informal recreation hours and weekends. Sport Clubs The sport club program involves students, faculty, and staff which compete against local, state, regional, and national college and university teams in a variety of sports. Included are: Billiards, racquetball, rodeo, skiing, softball, soccer, fencing, fitness club, bowling, volleyball, table tennis and martial arts. People interested in starting up a new club should contact the Campus Recreation Office, 626-6972, which is open from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Wilderness Recreation Center The Wilderness Recreation Center rents recreational equipment such as cross-country skis, snowboards, camping equipment, game equipment, white water rafts, mountain bikes, and canoes at nominal fees. It also coordinates field trips and programs for courses and organizations. CAREER SERVICES CENTER (Career Planning, Cooperative Education and Employment) Director: Steven Eichmeier Location: Union Building, Room 280 Telephone: 626-6393 The Career Services Center provides support through information and services designed to increase employment opportunity and career/life awareness for students and alumni of Weber State. Three interrelated programs help achieve this goal: • Career Planning/Individual Counseling • Cooperative Education/Internships • Recruitment/Career Transition and Advisement Career planning and individual counseling professionals seek to intervene as early as possible in students' college educational process to help guide them into rewarding career/life choices. Cooperative education/internship professionals facilitate an alliance among undergraduate students, employers and faculty members for the purpose of providing academic major-related employment experiences for which college credit is awarded. Corporate and educational recruiting professionals provide extensive training to help Weber State students develop employment skills and create an atmosphere wherein employers, students and alumni can match needs. Additional support services include a professionally staffed career/employer library, job service, part-time and full-time employment opportunities and work-study employment opportunities. COUNSELING AND PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES Director. Richard Southwick Location: Building 1, Room 125 Telephone: 626-6406 Purpose The purpose of the Counseling and Psychological Services Center is to promote student development in emotional, social, educational, and career areas. Services are also available to faculty and staff members. Occasionally, members of the University population encounter circumstances that induce frustration, stress, and personal disruption. Effective strategies for coping with these situations and feelings facilitate emotional and educational growth. The Counseling Center provides group and individual programs to enhance both personal and interpersonal development. Description The Counseling and Psychological Services Center has a full-time, professional staff of psychologists and counselors who work from a wide variety of theoretical approaches. Counseling regarding any aspect of personal development noted above can be obtained by scheduling an appointment through the Center receptionist. Confidentiality Initial intake interviews and all counseling sessions are kept strictly confidential. Psychiatric Service A psychiatrist serves as a consultant to the Counseling and Psychological Services Center and is available for limited psychiatric assistance through referral by and conjoint treatment with a member of the Counseling Center staff. DRUG AND ALCOHOL PROGRAM Coordinator: Grant Protzman Location: Union Building, Room 427 Telephone: 626-6886 This program focuses on education and prevention. It is designed to encourage non-users of drugs and alcohol to continue to be non-users, to encourage occasional users to stop and to encourage and assist regular users to eliminate their use. The components of the program include: • College Interdisciplinary Drug and Alcohol Curriculum and information materials • Interaction communities • Peer helpers for high risk students/groups • Student, staff, faculty and administrator drug and alcohol abuse prevention assistance and referral Sponsorship of drug and alcohol free activities and support groups • DAHN (Drug and Alcohol Help Network) EDUCATIONAL RESOURCE PROGRAMS Director: Alan Dayley Location: Union Building, Room 354 Telephone: 626-6082 Educational Resource Programs are services designed to assist re-entry women students, minority students, and adult students. These programs focus particularly on recruitment, orientation, retention, graduation, and placement of these groups of students. Current programs are as follows: Adult Educational Resource Center Specialist: Gloria Perez-Jensen Location: Union Building, Room 354 Telephone: 626-6082 Adult students (over age 23) who are entering or reentering college have special needs to be met in order to make successful academic adjustment. This office provides these non-traditional students (on campus and off campus) the following assistance: Admissions Information Registration Information Academic Advisement Counseling Graduation Information Career Planning and Placement Information Multicultural Educational Resource Center Coordinator: Melvin Gillespie Location: Union Building, Room 354 Telephone: 626-6082 This Center provides academic support services for over 800 minority students enrolled at Weber State. Services are designed to provide a supportive environment, help students overcome barriers, establish educational objectives and achieve their academic goals. Assessment and Placement Services Coordinator: Margo Milianta Location: Stewart Library, Room 004 Telephone: 626-6092 The mission of Assessment and Placement Services is to diagnose the learning skills of freshman students and then to develop an individualized development plan. The areas for diagnosis are as follows: reading, writing, math, study skills, career goals, academic values and critical reasoning skills. Collaborative learning groups are also available so that freshmen may gain information about learning styles and educational values and attitudes. Learning Support Services Coordinator: Location: Stewart Library, Room 004 Telephone: 626-7207 The mission of Learning Support Services is to assist students in becoming more independent, self-confident and efficient in the learning process.
