Show DIVISION OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION Reed K. Swenson, Chairman The Division includes the departments of Intercollegiate Athletics, Health Education, Physical Education, and Recreation Education. The College Health Service Program is administered by the Division. Medical ExaminationA medical examination given by the family physician and recorded on the official Weber State College Medical Examination sheets is required of each student at his initial entrance. Required Physical EducationThree quarter hours of approved physical education activity courses. Physical Education Activity Course 1, for men, and Physical Education Activity Course 21, for women, should be taken during the freshman year, unless a student is following a specified curriculum. It is recommended that men complete P.E. 1 and women P.E. 21 before taking additional P.E. requirements. Men may satisfy the Physical Education requirement by taking in addition to Physical Education 1, two credit hours selected from Physical Education Activity Courses numbered 2-19, 60-69, 41, 43, 50. Women may satisfy the Physical Education requirement by taking in addition to Physical Education 21, two credit hours selected from Physical Education Activity Courses numbered 22-39, 41, 43, 50. Health EducationHealth Education 1 is required for graduation of all students except as provided in special curricula. Baccalaureate Degree Requirements Official acceptance as a candidate for a physical education major will be determined at the beginning of the junior year upon demonstration of satisfactory character and academic achievement. Foundation courses required for majors and minors in physical education and for minors in health education and recreation: Physiology 1, Psychology 1, Family Life 6, Speech 12, Chemistry 5 or Physics 5, 6 hours of Physical Education activities in six different activities; i.e. swimming, dancing, gymnastics, weight training, individual sports and team sports. Physical Education MajorForty-five hours of approved courses including the following: 10 hours methods of activities (including 105, 108), P.E. 57, 58, 59, 85, 150, 151, 153, 160, 161, 162, 163, 190, Health Education 105, 110. Physical Education Teaching MajorSame requirements as above plus education requirements for the secondary or elementary teaching certificates. Minors will be offered in Physical Education, Health Education, and Recreation Education by fulfilling 25 hours of approved courses as follows: 204 Physical Education MinorTwenty-five hours of approved courses including P.E. 153, 161, 162, and 8 hours of methods of activities. Health Education MinorTwenty-five hours of approved courses including H.E. 1, 105, 110, 112, Psychology 140, and Bacteriology 5. Recreation Education Minor Twenty-five hours of approved courses including: Six hours of recreation activities, R.E. 80, 88, 153, 155, Physical Education 106, 108, 105, 157. Special emphasis on health education, recreation education, coaching, or physical therapy will be granted to physical education majors with departmental permission. Extracurricular Activities Intercollegiate AthleticsA full program of intercollegiate athletics will be offered as a member of the Big Sky Athletic Conference. Members are: Weber State College, Gonzaga University, Idaho U., Idaho State, Montana U., Montana State. Directing this program are Professor Reed K. Swenson, Athletic Director; Assistant Professors Wallace K. Nalder, Head Football Coach; Raymond E. Rhead, Tennis and Golf Coach; Instructors J. Richard Motta, Head Basketball Coach, and Richard G. Williams, Head Baseball Coach; Lou Gladwell, Publicity; Gary Crompton, Graduate Manager; Bud Belnap, Wrestling Coach; Marvin J. Peterson, Track and Field Coach and Leroy Overstreet, Football. Health Service ProgramThe program provides protective and educative benefits for every student. It includes appraisal, consultations, follow-up procedures, and emergency care for sudden illness, and accidents. Intramural Sports Intramural sports programs will be conducted for men and women. The Men's Intramural Association is organized to conduct the program for all men students. The Women's Intramural Association is organized to conduct the program for all women students.
