Show Obituary Linnard Holston Sunrise - January 10, 1930 ™ Sunset - May 18, 2019 Ogden city community icon, Linnard Holston passed away peacefully on Saturday May 18, 2019 at the age of 89. Linnard was born January 10, 1930 in Washington, Arkansas to Wesly Holston and Flora McCroye. He had 2 sisters, Lille and Callie who has also been called to rest in years prior. Linnard only had one son, Lin Ervin Holston who passed in 2004. In the 50s, Linnard met Merle Corine Crowe at the Wall Avenue Community Center. They married in 1958 and were committed until Merle was called to rest in 2015. The Wall Avenue Community Center also provided a place for Linnard to display his athletic talents. Linnard earned many achievements with one of the highest being the AAU Golden Glove boxing champion in 1947. He also played tennis and was one best table tennis players to come through Ogden. From 1951-1953, Linnard served in the Korean War. He went on to work at Southern Pacific railroad where he retired after 42 years. Linnard has also been a staple at the Marshall White Community Center since it opened in the 60’s. There he continued his legacy of boxing by coaching the youth boxing team and serving as a mentor to all the children at both the center and in the community. After retirement from the railroad, Linnard continued to “babysit” at the Marshall White Center and worked during fruit seasons at the Pettingill Farm during. At the Pettingill Farm, Linnard continued to shine his light by passing inspiring words and sayings such as “You gotta taste this peach, you don’t buy shoes without trying them on.” Linnard is survived by 2 grandchildren; Jonathan and Ja’Wana Holston, Daughter in-law; Annette C Holston, and 3 great grandchildren; Madelyn Holston, Ma’Kaiha Holston and Brooklyn Holston; nieces: Jacalyn Blackenship, Patricia Ann Johnson, and Keica Ballen; nephews: Marcus Charles Criner and Mike Blackenship, along with a host of family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, nephew Phillip Gaston and son Linnard Holston. A visitation will take place on Thursday May 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Myers Mortuary of Ogden, 845 Washington Blvd. Brief services will be held Friday May 24 at 12:00 p.m. at New Zion Baptist Church at 2935 Lincoln where Linnard was a member for over 60 years. |
