On the outside, Roy High mo : | Pie| i i} oe + looked just like any other new school. But from the moment we stepped inside, it was unique. The first thing that surprised us was the stillness. Even though it was between classes, nobody was making a disturbance in the halls. We wanted to know where everybody was, so we took a look around. Here's what we found: Roy High is one of 12 demonstration schools throughout the nation that is test— ing a new type of curriculum, Briefly, it works this way: students only go to class on an average of about 4 hours a day. The rest of their time is spent in private Study where they stay in the build-— ing. The entire school is set up for this type of a program. Reference rooms, laboratories, shops--everything is open to all students, all of the time. There is even a typing center where students can type up themes in their spare time. Everything is new, including wall-to- wall carpeting in every room. The atmosphere is always relaxing and perfect for individual study, {fs this new program working? Administrators and students alike seem to think so. The students we interviewed seemed more than pleased with the freedom they had under the new system. They all agreed that they were learning more and liking it better than ever before. Now comes the big question: Why can't we have a system like this at Ben Lomond? It's time that we catch up to the present.
