Show en ol eel HIGHLANDER 4 FRIDAY, MARCH Scots Sweep To State Championship MATMEN RECORD 17, 1967 POST UNBEATEN FOR SEASON It was 14 long years in coming, but Ben Lomond finally garnered its first state championship. The Scottie wrestling team put the top on an undefeated season with a smashing sweep of the state championship. Coach Dawson’s grapplers proved too strong for every other team in the state as they pulled off three individual titles and a total of 68 points. Davis High finished a distant second with 38 points, followed by Skyview, Box Elder, Cyprus, and Olympus. Leading the Scottie attack were Roger Anderson, Art Suekawa, and Jerry Staley. Anderson won the individual title in the 103-pound division by virtue of a 3-1 decision over Lynn Hilton from Pleasant Grove. Anderson’s victory was the result of a great comeback, because Roger had to forfeit his Region I match earlier in the season because of a bad back. In the 138-pound division, junior Art Suekawa finally overcame a jinx to beat Skyview’s Bob Thalman. Thalman had beaten Art twice before, but the state championship more than evenied the duel. Finally, heavyweight Jerry Staley pulled a big upset to avenge Dan Moroney of Davis with a tight 2-1 decision. The state championship culminated a season-long effort by the Scots. Tryouts and practices are beginning in all four major sports. Here’s a quick rundown of the activity: Golf Coach Monte Bailey is optimistic of a good season this year with two returning lettermen in Dave Alexander and Scot Fishburn and four others with experience. Most of the team members were picked during a tournament held last fall, but there are still openings for good golfers. The first meet will be April 3, when the Scotties will host Bonneville. The team will compete in the Knudson Cup, an annual competition between most of Utah’s “skiing” high schools. Ski Clan President Brad Hunter, another URS racer, is now in Stowe, Vermont, competing in the National Championships. After winning the Intermountain Ski Association’s downhill championship at Jackson, Wyoming, Brad was named to the “Nationals” team, consisting of the 15 best junior skiers from the Intermoun- tain States. Just the same, if track goes according to pattern, it should be - great, as usual. Experience is the key to tennis this year. Coach Dinsdale has lettermen to fill nearly all of 7 starting positions. Even better, the team has a real break in Chuck Pomeroy, who transferred from South High, where he played number one doubles. All in all, the tennis team could have its best season ever. Finally, the big sport this spring should be baseball. Coach Moyes’ squad took region last year, and they could very well repeat. Pitchers Judd King and Merrill Turley are back and, with Jim Stith catching, they probably make up the best battery in the region. Add the fielding of Doug Kump, Glade Wimmer, and Ken Brubaker, to name a few, and the hitting power of the entire team, and this year could bring BL its second straight title.
