Show 22 ANNUAL CATALOGUE by the department. The Dorian Singers, the Musettes, and the instrumental and vocal quartets trios, and duets are composed of students of exceptional talent. They represent the college in musical activities throughout the state. Band and Orchestra serve varying student body interests. The orchestra strives toward the artistic rendition of overtures and symphonies and takes an active part in the production of the college opera. The Department of Speech offers opportunity for student participation in plays and programs. Under the direction of the Department of Speech, it is customary to present three full-length plays each year, as well as a number of one-act plays for contest and special program purposes. Students of recognized ability and training are used as assistants in different phases of the play production program. Classes in interpretation and acting offered by the department are designed to give students special training for such purpose within the college and to qualify them for amateur performances in their own church, clubs, and social circles. Casts for all major productions and for contest plays are chosen by try-outs open to all registered students of approved scholastic standing. The Department of English offers opportunities for participation in student publications and forensics. The Department of English supervises all student publications. The Acorn is the college annual. Participation in this activity gives students two kinds of experience: editorial and business. Editorial work consists of planning the book, arranging art designs, pictures, cover, and format generally; of writing resumes of the year's activities, and of copy and proof reading. Business involves making contracts for photography, printing, and engraving, soliciting, advertising, and selling the book. The Weber Herald is the college newspaper intended to provide practical journalistic experience for those who have an interest in newspaper writing. Scribulus, the college literary quarterly, was conceived to serve a three-fold purpose: first, to provide practical periodical experience for those whose primary interests are in creative work; second, to stimulate the student body generally to self-expression; and third, to give a more utilitarian purpose to class exercises in composition. The forensic program includes extempore and impromptu speaking, oratory, and debate. The Department of English directs all forensic activities of the student body. Extempore Speaking: A traditional intra-collegiate ex tempore contest is held annually. The James L. Barker Contest is designed to stimulate interest in extempore speaking and to encourage class competition in this activity. The winner is permitted the honor of havng his class numerals engraved upon a silver loving cup and is given an individual award of ten dollars by Professor James L. Barker. The department each year sponsors two Novitiate Contest in extempore speaking, the purpose of which is to orient new students in Weber College and to initiate them into the speech program of the college. WEBER COLLEGE 23 A gold key and a silver key are awarded by the department to first and second place winners in each contest. Impromptu Speaking: The impromptu J. S. Lewis and Company Contest is intended to foster competition among individual participants. The winner is presented with a gold medal. Oratory: Two traditional intra-collegiate oratorical con tests are held annually: the Evelyn Nielson Woods Contest and the '05 Contest. The Evelyn Nielson Woods award, a personally selected medal, is offered to the student delivering in assembly the best pre pared ten-minute address. The honor of having his class numerals en graved upon a silver loving cup is given the winner of the '05 Con test. Debate: Debating has as its curricular basis a course in argumentation, English 5. Those who represent the college in interscholastic competition, are chosen upon merit from the school generally. Participation in one intercollegiate debate makes a student eligible for member ship in the local chapter of the national Phi Rho Pi honorary debating society. The Department of Physical Education provides for mass participation as well as for the exceptional athlete. The Department of Physical Education teaches the fundamental skills and strategy in various activities in the physical education classes. To provide opportunity for further participation of all students, the programs of intramural and interscholastic athletics have been organized. Interscholastic Athletics: For the exceptional athlete, interscholastic competition is provided in football, basketball, swimming, wrest ling and boxing, fencing, tennis, track and field. These sports provide the competition between the junior colleges of Utah and Idaho. Regular schedules are arranged in the various events in the Utah and Idaho division. The winners of the divisions then compete for the league championship. Intramural Athletics: For the mass of students, competition is organized in a larger variety of sports so that all members of the student body may compete in the activities of their choice. The program is confined to the various groups on the campus, and the management of contests is largely in the hands of student managers and directors under the supervision of the Physical Education Department. Intra mural sports are organized in the belief that the following purposes of the program serve the vital interests of young people: (1) recreation, (2) social contacts, (3) group sport, (4) health, and (5) permanent interest in sports. Women's Athletic Association develops student enthusiasm for recreational activity. The aim of the Women's Athletic Association is to develop enthusiasm for recreational activity with socially desirable qualifications, to encourage the spirit of service to the college, and to promote sportsmanship, leadership, and friendliness. It provides student leadership for spontaneous and organized play, and recreation for the women students of the college. Membership is open to any woman in the college who desires to participate in sports. The highlights of the W.A.A. program include in addition many varied outings such as hiking, winter sports, bicycling, roller skating, riding, etc. |
