A course dealing with the nature of mechanics; methods of transmitting motion in machines, contact mechanismn, friction gearing, gear teeth, cams, link-work, belts, ropes and chains, and trains of mechanism. A course treating properties and uses of the various grades of steels and alloys, wood, brick, cement, glass, plaster, concrete, and building stones. Three quarter hours. Winter. A study of the elements of natural environment and their influences in determining the activities and cultural patterns of man. Five quarter hours. Autumn, Winter. (Not given 1937-1938.) Buss 2. Geography of Utah. A general cultural course designed to provide a better knowledge and appreciation of the surface features of the state and their influences on the people. One field trip required. Geology John Gustave Lind Walter Richard Buss Arlo Eckersley Childs It is recommended that a student pursuing a major in Geology complete Geology 1, 3, 5, 7, and Chemistry 1 and 2, or 4 and 5. 1. Physical Geology. A course concerned with the work of the surface subterranean agencies which affect the earth's crust; the structural history of mountain ranges, and the development of ore deposits. Utah geology is emphasized, especially the erosion cycle and the phases of economic importance. Field trips required. It is desirable to supplement this course with Geology la. Four quarter hours. Autumn, Winter, Spring. Lind, Childs la. Laboratory and Field Work. A course requiring one period of laboratory and field work a week. Credit not allowed unless taken with Geology 1. One quarter hour. Autumn, Winter, Spring. Childs 3. Historical Geology. A study of the geological formations, the areal distribution of the larger units, and the characteristic plant and animal fossils of each, with particular reference to North America and Europe. A study of the origin, composition, and classification of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks, and their constituent minerals. Field trips and rock collection required. Five quarter hours. Simple crystallography, blowpipe analysis, and other megascopic characteristics necessary to identification are considered. Prerequisites: Geology 1, and Chemistry 1 and 2.
