The old Liberty Bell was ordered to be cast in London in 1751 by the superintendent of the State House for the Province of Pennsylvania. It arrived here at. the end of August, 1752, but in the following month it was cracked by a stroke of the clapper without any other violence. It was then recast by a Philadelphia firm and again hung in 1753. This recasting was not satisfactory and the founders, Pass & Stow, obtained the privilege of recasting the bell. It was hung in the State House once more in June, 1753, and with the exception of the period from 1777 until after the evacuation of the city by the British forecs, has hung there continuously ever since. The exact weight of the bell is 2080 pounds. Its diameter is five feet at the lip and the thickest portion is three inches through. It is lettered in a line entirely encircling the crown with the sentence: "Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof. Lev. xxv, v.x." Under this sentence is another: "By order of the Assembly of the Province of Pennsylvania for the State House in Philada. "Pass & Stow, Philada. "MDCCLIII." On August 27, ,1753, the bell was first rung to call the Assembly together. After that it was rung on all important occasions in the early history of the nation. Near the noon hour of July 8, 1776, it rang out the proclamation of the Declaration of Independence. The last tolling of the bell was on July 8, 1835, over the funeral of John Marshall, Chief Justice of the United States. It was during his funeral solemnities that the bell, without other violence than that of being slowly tolled, parted its side and became silent forever. The bell now in use in the State House was presented to the city by Henry Sey- fert, July 4, 1876.
