Show PAGE THE HIGHLANDER 2 WEDNESDAY, EDITORIALS: UNITED NATIONS ENLARGE FORCES Giviag Thanks at Thanksgiving When seating yourself to the table covered with most delicious and time-consuming meal of the year, what thoughts pass through your mind. Do you plan ways in which to be the first to grab the coveted drumstick, or do you have another preference? Maybe you think of the thousands of calories and try to decide which of the scrumptous foods taste best with the least effect upon the fat factory. Possibly, you think of all the dishes afterwards, or Liberties Gained Through Sacrifice How long has it been since you really thought about the liberties and freedoms that you enjoy in this free land? During the past month we celebrated Veterans’ Day. Did we really honor our country’s heroes, or did we merely let the day slip past without a second thought to the sacrifices these men made to give us peace and freedom. Are you one of the many guilty of taking your country for _ granted? When you repeat the Pledge of Allegiance, do you feel a deep pride within yourself, or do you merely repeat it out of Habit? Perhaps you are one of the few who feel that it __ is not necessary to repeat it at all. The freedoms we enjoy in this country did not come to free of charge. They came at the cost of many lives. Can us ae afford to be so lax with the ideals that our forefathers fought 50 valiantly for? Have they become so ordinary that they no longer command our respect? Try to imagine what it would be like to live without these freedoms. There would be no pride in your work or your country. All reason for achievement and brotherly love would be removed. Think on this—think and then give thanks for the brave men who gave their lives that we might have a reason to live. They realize and comprehend only that which is shown them. Small minds see only small items. : Within the boundary of school life, lie varying persons with each personality entailing years of learning or years of carelessness. The latter usually shows up above the first. Students, in an unknowing show of admiration, turn to the small groups of students who represent the lowered values of life. With recognition these organizations become pendantic as they proce their worth in small stunts of courage. Without encouragement these groups dwindle, fall from grace, and dissolve into a few small but loud individuals. With the help of the majority, the minority can be saved. The public can be made aware of the honor of students, not of the honor of thieves. Thieves who seek unearned recognition gain it only in tearing down the reputation of the majority which builds.
