Show 34 The Department of Music provides for student participation in both choral and instrumental activities. Each year those whose interests are in the field of choral music concentrate their efforts upon the presentation of the traditional opera, a Christmas Oratorio and three formal concerts. Choral activities center around the College Choir. There are six smaller ensemble singing units: The Dorian Singers, a selected group of male vocalists; the Musettes, a traditional choral group of women; the Mixed Quartet; the Symphonettes, consisting of fifteen women and one male soloist; the Trio; and the Duet. The Soloist Club includes only those selected singers who have reached a cultural state in their development where they can represent Weber College as vocal soloists before the public. These combined musical organizations unite their efforts once or twice during the College year to present a formal concert. It is the aim of the Department of Music to maintain both a band of standard instrumentation and an orchestra of symphonic proportion, and to encourage musical growth through the study and public performance of the best in musical literature. These groups participate in at least three formal concerts each year in conjunction with the choral groups. The Department of Physical Education provides for mass participation as well as for the exceptional athlete. The Department teaches the fundamental skills and strategy in various activities in the physical education classes. The program of intramural activities is provided for the mass of students. Competition is organized in a large variety of sports so that all members of the student body may compete in activities of their choice. The program is planned for the various groups on the campus as well as for all unaffiliated students. Two awards are given: a cup for the organized group massing the greatest number of points during the year, and a medal for the individual student massing the greatest number of points during the year. The program is largely in the hands of student managers and directors under the supervision of the Physical Education Department. Intramural sports are organized in the belief that the following purposes of the program serve the vital interests of young people: (1) recreation, (2) social contacts, (3) group sports, (4) health, and (5) permanent interest in sports. The Women's Athletic Association aims to develop "A sport for every girl and a girl for every sport." The intramural program of the W.A.A. is divided into sections: club competitions, and individual competition. Social clubs and unaffiliated teams compete for the traveling trophy which is presented to the winnig team in the spring of each year. A club winning the trophy three times becomes the permanent owner. Recognition is given to individual sport winners. Five quarters of participating in athletics even though a girl may not be a winner, make her eligible to receive individual recognition. The program of interscholastic athletics is designed for the exceptional athlete. Interscholastic competition is provided in football, basketball, swimming, wrestling, boxing, fencing, tennis, track and field. These sports provide competition between the junior colleges of Utah and Idaho. Regular schedules are arranged for the various events in the Intermountain Junior College Athletic Association. ■35 COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES Weber College cooperates with the community in developing educational and cultural programs by offering a community concert series, a lecture series, a community theatre, miscellaneous entertainments, a community service bureau, and a community physical education program. The Associated Alumni of Weber College assists in promoting all interests of the College. Community Concerts. In 1939, Weber College joined with the Ogden Community Concert Association to bring to the community a GREATER CONCERT SERIES. This connection permits Weber College students to enjoy community concert attractions as well as Weber College contributions from the concert stage. The combined course consists of programs by dramatic artists, instrumental soloists and symphony orchestras, Metropolitan Opera singers and choral groups, solo dancers and ballet theatres. Lecture Series. The Weber College Lecture Series organized in 1944 is designed to keep Weber College students abreast of current world happenings, and to bring to the campus master minds in the arts and sciences. Patrons of the College are permitted to purchase season tickets at a nominal fee to attend this series of six or more outstanding attractions each season. Community Theatre. To further round out the cultural program of Weber College students, the College, in 1944, combined with the Little Theatre movement of the community to bring to the campus a series of outstanding dramatic productions. Ogden citizens may attend these performances by purchasing season tickets. (See p. 33.) Miscellaneous Entertainments. To add to the enjoyment of Weber College students a limited number of commercial entertainments in the nature of magician shows, light musical comedies, moving pictures and travelogs are presented during Assembly periods and in the evenings. The Weber College Community Service Bureau was organized to provide programs of merit to civic and church organizations of the Weber College area, and to give development to talented students within the College student body. The community is encouraged through College publicity to request programs utilizing students who are trained in speech, English, and music. The Community Physical Education Program attempts to promote recreation and to educate people of the community in physical skills and attitudes toward physical activities that are beneficial to maintaining their mental and physical health. An average of over one hundred people attend this program each day of the year. Classes, tournaments, leagues, free plays, clubs and mixed recreation are offered to members of the gymnasium. The Associated Alumni of Weber College promotes the interests of the College and provides social activity for the Weber College Alumni. The Alumni has been helpful in securing funds with which to purchase property on the Weber College block. The association is organized with a president, two vice presidents, a treasurer, a secretary, and a board of directors. This board consists of the officers of the preceding year and of twelve regular members elected by the association. During the school year 1944-45, the following committee organization was effected: Project Committee, Membership Committee, Program Committee, Publicity Committee, and Legislative Committee. |
