Show Graduation GRADUATION Weber State College grants the degrees of Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of General Studies; titles of Associate of Arts, Associate of Science and Associate of Applied Science; an Institutional Diploma and an Institutional Certificate. Application for GraduationA candidate for the bachelor degree must file an Application for Graduation obtained at the Graduation Office during the spring quarter of his junior year. Each applicant will receive a written report on his standing for graduation upon which to plan the work for his senior year. A candidate for the title of Associate of Arts or Science, or Associate of Applied Science, or for the Institutional Diploma, or for the Institutional Certificate must file a written application for graduation with the Graduation Office not later than the sixth week of the autumn quarter. Applications will not be considered within the last few weeks before Commencement, unless special permission is given by the Dean of Admissions and Records. A candidate for graduation must pay his graduation fee at the Cashier's Office at the time he is making application for graduation. For a student to be admitted to candidacy for any degree or title, his scholastic record must show that he has satisfied the entrance requirements and that he can fulfill the requirements for graduation. No credit obtained prior to the time a student matriculates will be used toward graduation requirements unless approved by the Graduation Committee. The student must have cleared all College financial obligations in order to graduate. A candidate is required to be present at Baccalaureate and Commencement exercises unless excused by the dean of his school. Application for such excuse may be obtained at the Graduation Office and should be submitted to the appropriate dean. Honors at GraduationA candidate who has completed requirements for graduation at Weber State College and whose grade point average in all registered work is not less than 3.8 is awarded high honors (magna cum laude). A student whose grade point average in all his registered work is not less than 3.4 is awarded honors (cum laude). The names of students winning high honors and honors are published in the Commencement program and elsewhere as the President may direct. Honors for Commencement are determined during the spring quarter and do not reflect final grades for that quarter. Grade RequirementsA student must attain an average grade point of at least 2.0 for all his registered work. Credit RestrictionsNot more than 30 quarter hours of D grade credit may be applied toward graduation. The school or department, however, may reject any or all D grade work toward the major or minor requirements. Not more than 45 of the total hours required for the baccalaureate degree may be correspondence credit. REQUIREMENTS FOR BACHELOR DEGREES Minimum RequirementsA candidate for graduation with a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of General Studies Degree, must have completed a minimum of 183 credits. Upper Division RequirementA minimum of 60 credits of upper division work. Major RequirementsA major in any one department will consist of not fewer than 40 and not more than 60 credits in the major field. (See Majors and Minors.) Minor RequirementsA minor is a program of study generally selected to compliment and strengthen a student's major and/or enrich the student's overall educational program . Some bachelor degree programs do not require a minor. See your major program of study outline (o determine if a minor is required. For the minors available, see the Majors and Minors listing in this catalog. 16 General Education Change in Graduation RequirementsA student normally is held to the requirements outlined in the catalog published four years before the year of his graduation. Where there is written agreement between a department chairman and a student, graduation requirements within a student's major or minor may be met by completing the requirements outlined in any catalog published one, two, or three years before the year of graduation. To meet specific and general education requirements, a student normally follows the requirements listed in the catalog published four years before the year of graduation. With the approval of the Graduation Office he may complete the specific and general education requirements by following the requirements outlined in a catalog published one, two, or three years before the year of his graduation. Residence RequirementA candidate for the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of General Studies Degree must have a minimum of 45 credits in residence at Weber State College and be registered at the College during at least one quarter following the last commencement prior to his graduation. Foreign Language RequirementA candidate for a Bachelor of Arts degree-must complete 24 credits, or the equivalent, in one or more approved foreign language. A maximum of 15 college credits from high school may count toward filling the foreign language requirement, provided the student can pass an examination to demonstrate his knowledge of the subject. (For a list of examinations see the Foreign Language Department in this catalog). Transfer credit from another institution will be recognized without an examination . School or Department RequirementsFurther information concerning specific courses will be provided under the discussion of school or department requirements and instructions. Candidates for graduation in the School of Education must meet the minimum requirements as outlined by the Utah State Board of Education for certification of elementary and secondary teachers. Specific Course RequirementsAll candidates must include in the 183 credits required for graduation the following courses: Credits English 101, 102, 103 (English Composition) 9 English 103Writing in the Disciplines: Divided into 103A (Social Sciences and Humanities), 103B (Applied Sciences), and 103C (Exact Sciences). Health Education 100 2 Physical Education (Medical exemption approved by the college physician required to waive this requirement) 3 (For specified activities see Physical Education Department) The State Requirement in American History, Government and Economics 3-5 Senate Bill Requirement in American History, Government, and Economics may be satisfied by: 1. Completing one of the following courses: Economics 274, Economic History of the United States; Economics 430, Business and Government; History 170, American Civilization; History 120, United States History and History 121, United States History; History 420, Constitutional History of the United States; Political Science 110, American National Government; Philosophy 320, Philosophy of Democracy. (Economics 274, History 120, 121, and 170, Political Science 110, and Philosophy 320 may also be applied to general education requirements.) or 2. Presenting advanced placement credit in American History or suitable transfer courses from other institutions or 3. Passing a special examination administered before the end of the second week of each quarter under the direction of the Dean of the School of Social Science. If this option is completed, the Social Science requirement is reduced to 9 credit hours. 17 |
