Show The Pioneer Post Volume IX Issue 11 Marriott-Slaterville City Newsletter November 2007 Christmas message It seems like it wasn't long ago that we celebrated Memorial Day and those that have passed before us, and then suddenly the kids were out of school for summer vacation. Almost no time passed before we were celebrating our nation's independence with parades and picnics. Before our memories of Labor Day were forgotten, we were carving pumpkins. At the Trunk or Treat we acquired great quantities of candy, Halloween treats may have interfered with some Thanksgiving appetites. Now we're hearing carols on the radio and participating in the rush to get ready for another Christmas and New Years. Things seem to get busier and busier every passing year. In the rush of our lives, outside influences frequently push us to look forward to the next event without allowing us to enjoy what's happening around us right now. The week before Halloween while some were still looking for costumes, a child was heard to say, "Oh, look Mommy, a Halloween Tree!" I wish we could spend more time on Thanksgiving without infringing on the Spirit of Christmas. Perhaps we can. This is the time of year to be thankful for the many blessings we enjoy. I'm thankful for the community in which we live and call home. We're one of the few cities without a municipal property tax and thanks to our good mayor and city staff, we have no debt. I'm grateful for the many volunteers who help with planning and activities. We have dedicated people who help with parks, senior services, planning and zoning, events, maintenance, and our youth program. I'm thankful for our law enforcement, fire protection, and other public safety personnel. I'm grateful for the veterans who have and those who continue to protect our land and our freedoms. Since Christmas is meant to celebrate Christ, let's follow His example and teachings, regardless of all the hustle and bustle around us. As we reflect on the past and look forward to the future, let us take time to give thanks and treat others as we would like to be treated. Let's use this time of year to help those around us and look for opportunities to give and serve. Forgive past offenses and make restitution where it's due. May you have a safe and enjoyable holiday season with family and loved ones. Rob Smout, City Council LOCAL UPDATES Breakfast with Santa. Santa is coming to Marriott-Slaterville for breakfast again!
