Show Monday, January 31 Coldest January on record Snowed some very cold. Jr & Blanch came in this evening I have read most of the day Letter from Avontelling of Thairs divorce. Tuesday, February 1 Cold stormy day. Have read most of day Letter from Avon Junior called in evening Presidents Page This Month of February The name of this, the second month of the year, was derived from the Latin word februare meaning to make pure. I was very much impressed by the meaning of this word and the fact of it being designated and still remaining on our calendar. We are told that on the 15th day of this month, the people of those days held great ceremonies, the purpose of which was to drive out all impurities so that the earth and the people would become purified; the earth, that it might produce bountiful crops, and the people, that they might become pure in mind and heart. We become aware of the fact that the people even in those days were concerned about and realized the desirability, and, in their opinion, the necessity of making sacrifices to their gods during their ceremonies, to accomplish the purification of themselves, and of the earth. We, in this day, refer to Latin as the dead language. Gone are the ceremonies and the people who observed them. But after all the passing of centuries, we have with us still the symbol February to make pure. During the years that have intervened, the Science of Agriculture has proven most beneficial in assisting Mother Nature in making more and more bountiful the production of the soil for the benefit of mankind. What has science or mankind done to improve, or purify, the thinking of men toward each other? The Science of Agriculture has provided us with implements, chemicals, and education, and we have used them with most gratifying results. In like manner, man has been provided with the teaching, yes, even the example and the implements the Church and Fraternity the chemicals of the cells of his brain and heart that would produce the most gratifying result, peace on earth. But to what extent has he used them? I believe that as ye sow so shall ye reap was intended to apply to mans endeavor spiritually as well as agriculturally, even more so. I am sure that it is very apparent to all of us that there never was a time in the history of man when there was greater need for improvement in the relationship of mankind, one to another, than the present. We are all aware of the terrible power of destruction contained in the tiny atom bomb. May we become more and more aware of the power, contained in the tiny cells of our brain, for doing good when so directed by our thinking. In our thinking, may we be influenced by the thoughts which produced the acts and good deeds of Thomas A. Edison, the great discoverer of aids to mankind; of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, the great poet; of George Washington, and of Abraham Lincoln, the great presidents, who were founder and preserver of our Nation all of whom were born in February februare, to make pure. Sincerely and fraternally, President |
