Show Liquor Consumption Low In Utah, Apostle Says The consumption of liquor in Utah is the lowest of any state in the Union, said Apostle Joseph F. Merrill, L. D. S. Mount Ogden stake quarterly conference speaker, Sunday. There was a ripple of laughter from the large congregation when Apostle Merrill said statistics disclose that the highest consumption of hard liquor is in the District of Columbia. But what about Weber county? For the fiscal year of 1948 there was expended for hard liquor in Weber county 4,604,347. That is all too; much, Apostle Merrill said. The Church official deplored that drinking of hard liquor has become socially proper, because of the influence it has among young people. Two Most Broken Laws Reporting the activities of the stake no liquor, no tobacco committee, Lloyd F. Nuffer, assistant stake chairman declared that the two most broken laws in Utah are the placing of cigaret vending machines at stores, restaurants and other places where minors have access, and smoking in public buildings. Cigaret vending machines are legal only in places where minors are not permitted to enter, such as poolhalls, Nuffer said. The state law prohibiting the use of tobacco in public buildings is broken a hundred times, a day in the city hall, Nuffer declared. Nuffer commended Sheriff Mac M. Wade and Police Chief Maurice J. Schooff. He pointed out that the activities of law enforcement officers is great, and they will do even a greater job if they know they have your support. Observing the congregation filled the tabernacle to overflowing, Apostle Merrill said a large number of members do not attend quarterly conference because of a lack of seating accommodations. He expressed the hope that plans for construction of a larger tabernacle will go forward as rapidly as possible so that all who desire to come may be seated. Discussing other subjects Apostle Merrill declared that the L. D. S. church is not a protestant church. It is not a Catholic church. We sprung from no other church. We are an original church in a modern world because Joseph Smith saw God. Apostle Merrill told the large congregation that the recent disbanding of the Ogden tabernacle choir rests upon the shoulders of the general authorities of the church. Apostle Merrill made this explantion when Stake President Earl S. Paul denied responsibility. He declared that the disbanding of the choir was as great a shock to him as to others. However, he said, that by letter and other ways he had been accused of instigating the disbanding of the famed choir. Music at the morning session was by a large priesthood chorus directed by Glenn L. Hanson and at the evening session by a large Sunday school chorus with Heed Gammell conducting. Wayne N. Devereau was organist, assisted in the morning by a cornet trio, Armond Beers, Darrell Nelson and Dennis Jay, also Jay Anderson, flutist. Tuesday, September 6 Quiet day.
