In Your Garden Fall Roses Grow Big Here By Hazel D. Moyle (News Garden Editor) UTAH ROSES ARE lovely in June, but some say they are even finer in fall, and to prove just what one can perhaps expect at this season, just look at our photograph of an eight foot rose which bloomed a week ago in the garden of Mr. and Mrs. Robert F. McMaster at 1641 Roosevelt Ave. This ususual performance of this particular rose bush is an annual affair every fall in the McMaster garden. For the past several seasons it has put on this same spectacular fall display ... a charming gesture of defiance flung in the very teeth of approaching winter. This fine rose is the old hybrid perpetual George Arends, a rose which gives a wonderful show in June with its large, ful blooms of a delicate rose pink. And it also continues to send out other blooms all during the summer and fall months. Most other hybrid perpetual roses have only one set of roses during June, seldom producing others. But they are as a class so prolific in their June show that they are well worth growing, not only for the profusion of their large roses, but for their rich real rose perfume. GEORGE ARENDS often throws such a lovely challenge to Jack Frost in fall gardens in our Mountain West. It is one of the hybrid perpetuals well worth a place in any rose garden but should be placed as a background plant, away from the lower growing hybrid tea varieties. Mrs. McMaster tells us that her plant receives no extra attention. It is watered and tended like other rose plants in her garden, yet each fall, for the past several years, it has sent out this huge lovely and tall stemmed flower in late fall, a really heartening farewell to the year, and also a promise of another season of fine rose blooms next year.
