Show The largest crowd ever to attend an old folks outing in Weber county was present at Lorin Farr park Wednesday for the annual observance, E. A. Larkin, master of ceremonies, said today. A total of 1,800 old timers from Weber county and hundreds of visitors from neighboring states thronged the grounds. Two meals were served by workers from the eight L.D.S. stakes whose wards were represented on the grounds and enthusiasm was high among the guests. President David O. McKay, of the L.D.S. church first presidency, and Mrs. McKay were special visitors and brought regrets from President George Albert Smith that he could not attend. Mrs. Rosalia Kimball Edwards, 96, of the Ogden Twelfth ward, received a gift for being the oldest woman present. Mrs. Edwards is the only surviving daughter of Heber C. Kimball, first counselor to President Brigham Young, when the Mormon pioneers came to Utah in 1847. She was awarded a brooch. Otto J. Thorsted, 95, Mount Ogden ward, and Andreas Shields, 95, Ben Lomond ward, were given gifts for being the oldest men present. Mr. Thorsted got a wallet and Mr. Shields got an automatic pencil and a tie. The oldest married couple were Mr. and Mrs. John H. Earl of tne Ogden Fourth ward,; who have been married 73 years. Mr. Earl is 94 and Mrs. Earl is 92 and both were originally from Farmington. They were given a mirror. The oldest woman pioneer was Miss Mary Ann Rhodes of the Ogden Fourth ward. Miss Rhodes was born in London, England, and came to Utah in 1863. She was awarded a pioneer plaque. Oldest man pioneer was Peter Nielson of Ogden who came to Utah from Denmark in 1862. He received a set of book ends. Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Black of Ogden, parents of 16 children, were awarded a gift for having raised the largest family of anyone present. Longest married couple attending Weber county old folks day at Lorin Farr park were Mr. and Mrs. John H. Earl, Ogden L.D.S. Fourth ward. The Earls have been married 73 years. At side is Mrs. Rosalia Kimball Edwards, 96, Twelfth ward, oldest person on the grounds. |
