Ogden Standard April 15 1949 in Ogden 50 Years Ago Splendid work had been done by the Utah Battery in the Philippines, according to dispatches, following a lively exchange of shots with the insurgents who were forced to retreat behind their trenches. There were no losses on the American side, but Major Metcalf had a bullet pass through the lobe of his ear. Ogden now had the best hospital since it began life as a city, between Monroe and Madison, on Twenty eighth street, with the building operated better than the former Union Pacific hospital which was closed in 1896. Ogden General Hospital company was organized in 1896, with prime movers and stockholders Drs. G. W. Perkins, C. E. Coulter, John Driver, E. M. Conroy, J. S. Gordon and R. S. Joyce. The old plant had been completely remodeled, with linoleum spread on the floors and bedsteads replaced with new iron, white painted ones. The building had been wired for electricity and plumbing conditions changed to suit ideas of the coterie of physicians. In the ward room there was a capacity for 20 patients, and there were rooms sufficient for 10 more. The operating room was a model in its appointments, with marble slabs. There was a complete dispensary and conveniences for light and action. The kitchen and wash rooms were in the basement and there were furnaces and heating apparatus. Sewer connections had been made within the past year. There were now 23 patients in the establishment, hailing from Montana, Nevada, Wyoming and some from Oregon and Washington had been patients. The hospital had all the business of the Southern Pacific and Union Pacific railroads at this end of the line, and planned to secure work of other roads centering here. The hospital had a beautiful lawn and surroundings.
