Tribune Oct 18 49 Arizona in the Limelight With Record Breakers Congratulations to a neighboring state, once regarded as the last refuge of the first Americans and long avoided by impatient agriculturists as a hopeless waste of arid sand and volcanic rocks. Arizona has risen to pinnacles of popularity this year in spirited contests with the other 47 states. It was only the other day that Jacque Mercer was welcomed back to Phoenix after she had won the prize for beauty, charm and talent in a memorable contest against 51 competitors from all the states and territories of this republic. As Miss America she is the recognized queen of a country celebrated for its capable and charming girls and women. Now comes word of the selection of Kenneth England, a 19 year old boy of the town of Chandler, in Arizona, as the star Farmer of America for the year. The award was presented at the 22nd annual convention of Future Farmers of America, held this year at Kansas City. Against 237 contenders for the coveted title, including some from this and other intermountain states, he won his laurels last Tuesday. While it has nothing to do with pulchritude or production, it may be noted that the worlds endurance record for remaining in the air has just been completed by two pilots Woody Jongewood and Bob Woodhouse in their plane, the City of Yuma, at Yuma, Ariz. Meantime, the Hopi Indians hold their ceremonial dances, play with rattlesnakes and pray for rain, apparently oblivious to the modern achievements of pale face followers who are improving their looks, methods and skills in directions never taken by aboriginal neighbors.
