They have been known to fight off other animals to save the life of a man whose only sign of gratitude may be a kick. An example of a dogs loyalty and affection came to light recently in a news story from Long Beach, Cal., where a Seeing Eye dog refuted charges of cruelty made against his master by rushing to his side in the courtroom with every sign of friendliness. The judge, whose intellectual heritage seems to date back to the famous Solomon, ruled that the dog should be permitted to testify by his conduct in the trial of his blind master. The case was decided in favor of the owner on the dog's testimony. One may be permitted to hope and trust that the master, who needs a seeing eye in his work, will remember his dogs devotion and loyalty in all subsequent dealings with the splendid and intelligent animal. After all, the dog simply testified that he still loved the man, not that he had not been mistreated at times. The crew cut for girls is still too long, thinks a local man of affairs, whose secretary divides her time, half and half, between her hair and the job.
